Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter stated in a note to investors today that Microsoft will announce an Xbox 360 price cut tomorrow at the start of the revamped E3 Media & Business Summit, which takes place all week.

Microsoft is holding its E3 press conference Tuesday evening.

He said that the price cut will affect all three Xbox 360 models. The $299 Core pack will drop to $249; the $399 Premium pack will drop to $349; and the recently released $479 Elite model will drop to $399.

Pure speculation at this point, sure, but not one bit surprising if it does happen.

I also hear that the new chips are hitting the 360 soon. Going from a 90 nm process to a 65 nm one.

This is probably how they can afford the price-drop, and it will mean cooler consoles, less power to run (less money!), and less failures. My recommendation to 360 owners is to wrap your current system in a few towels, and play the prettiest game you have non-stop until you get the RRoD. Then, send your unit off for one of the new and improved ones.

The smaller chip process is one of the things I've been waiting for before getting a new console. If the Elite version hits $399 like I'm hearing, it will be very tempting. On the Sony side, a new 80GB version has been spotted that comes with Motorstorm, and might, I say MIGHT have the rumble version of the SixAxis. These have been my two big concerns for each system, so it might be decision time before too long.

Well, I had been thinking about getting an Elite at some point...may wait another month or so, but I definitely will be getting one now.

As swiv noted, Sony is also adding an 80gig to the fray. I was going to post it on the front page but ya beat me to it, Morbid.

I'm even more interested to see if that different-looking controller on the box is a rumble version of the SixAxis.

One reason the 80GB version is inferior to the 60GB version, the 60 has an Emotion (PS2) chip in it for emulating PS2 games, while the 80 will be emulating via software. Which means it won't do as many games, and probably won't do them as well. So, buyer beware.

To be fair, though, the 360 uses software emulation as well, and the support is even more spotty than the PS3, but right now many sites are saying that the 60GB version is a better buy, and that they should be snatched up before all systems are software-emulation. But really... if you have the old library and are dying to play last-gen games, don't unplug the old system and quit obsessing about backwards compatibility.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I have some money in the bank that I might as well spend before I leave for college. So at the $400 pricepoint, the Elite is sounding tempting. I'm just not sure I can justify buying a game console over more dvds.

Get the game console and stick to NetFlix. You don't really need to own those DVD's. If you get enough, they will start owning YOU!

I hate Netflix, though I will be going with something similar (Greencine). That being said, such services don't have any of the foreign dvds that I'm interested in, so even then, that would present a problem. Besides, there are so many thousands of dvds my collection is just begging for.

Then you are already lost, young Jedi.
