Child Abducted In Florida May Be In Carolinas

LEXINGTON, S.C. -- An Amber Alert has been issued for a 4-year-old boy who police say was abducted in Florida and who was in North Carolina as of Monday morning.
A sheriff also said that the man who has the boy has threatened to kill himself and the child rather than to be apprehended.
Sunday afternoon, 45-year-old Robert William Custer II met the child's mother, Renee Pennell-Rashell, in a supermarket parking lot in Ocala to return the boy to his mother after a visit. Instead, police said Custer abducted Pennell-Rashell and the boy.
Custer is Pennell-Rashell's ex-boyfriend.
Deputies said that instead of returning the child to Pennell-Rashell and letting her leave, Custer put a cloth over her mouth and nose, causing her to lose consciousness.
When Pennell-Rashell came to, she said she found that she and her son were in Custer's vehicle and that both of her wrists were tied to one knee with a plastic tie-lock.
She was able to free her wrists and ran into the building and locked herself in a restroom when he stopped for gas. She was so afraid that deputies said they had to get the fire department to open the door because she wouldn't unlock it. When the door was forced open, they said they found Pennell Rashell cowering inside. She was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries to her leg and wrists.
Pennell-Rashell told deputies that Custer said he had been planning the abduction for two years and that he planned to take them to Maryland or Canada.
She said that Custer has firearms, and though she didn't see one, she saw what appeared to be a pistol and bullets in the car.
Custer was driving a van similar to this one at the time of the abduction.

The child, Colin Custer, has blond hair and hazel eyes and was last seen wearing a gray short sleeve shirt with blue and red stripes, navy shorts and tan shoes with blue stripes.
