SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A man accused of holding a baby hostage for 12 hours at an apartment complex in Sandy Springs waived his first court appearance Tuesday morning.
Clinton Bailey, 33, was taken into custody around 9 p.m. Monday. The baby was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite and was expected to be fine, according to police.
Police were called to the One Sovereign Place Apartments in the area of Roswell Road and Long Island Drive around 9:30 a.m. Monday.
"I looked out the window and all of a sudden I see police and when they told me to leave, I saw they had the whole road shut down," said neighbor Kevin Arnold.
According to Lt. Keith Zgonc, Bailey walked into the apartment leasing office, saying that he thought the government was listening to him through a water heater in one of the units.
He then pulled out a handgun and told the apartment complex staff that he couldn't be arrested, but left without harming anyone and went back to the apartment.
That's when police were called to the apartment complex.
Officers learned that Bailey was barricaded in the apartment with a 7-month-old baby. Police said the baby belonged to 27-year-old Lindsay Rodgers, who lived at the apartment.
While police said they didn't know the exact relationship between Bailey and Rodgers, they did know he watched Rodgers' baby from time to time.
After nearly 12 hours, police were able to get Bailey to walk onto his porch. That's when police made their move inside to rescue the baby.
Rodgers showed up at the scene about 10 hours after the standoff began, and police said she wasn't helpful. Police arrested her and charged with obstruction for hindering the investigation after they learned she had been in the area for several hours, and had been in contact with Bailey while the standoff was happening.
Bailey was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
After the arrests, police found three guns and ammunition in the apartment.
