Brentton Matthew Wheeler.
Horry County police charged a Conway man in connection with a child abuse investigation launched Thursday.
Police were called after employees at an unnamed county middle school learned from students about a possible child abuse incident, according to a press release. As a result of the investigation, Horry County Police arrested Brentton Matthew Wheeler, 35, of Conway. He was charged with abuse/to Inflict great bodily injury upon a child.
The school resource officer started the investigation and learned the child faced “more than the normal corporal punishment,” the release said.
Detectives with the violent crimes section of Horry County police were then called. According to the release, the detectives learned the suspect is a registered sex offender that had accepted “custody” of four young males under age 18 without informing family court.
None of the males were related to the suspect, and the release said the children had been taken to the suspect’s house by their parents and left there.
According to the release, the investigation showed the kids had been forced to stand with their arms outstretched and their noses pressed against the wall for hours. They had also been tormented with a taser like stun gun and an air pistol.
Wheeler was booked at 6:21 p.m. Thursday and no bail has been set according to online records at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
All four children were placed in emergency protective custody with the Department of Social Services, the release said.
According to booking records at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, Wheeler’s bail was set at $35,000 and he was released from jail at 6:39 p.m. Friday.
According to police, the case remains open and additional charges and arrests are possible.
Wheeler’s status as a sex offender stems from a 1996 incident in Virginia where he was convicted for non-forcible sodomy, according to the Horry County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was a 17 year old male, records show.
