Rhonda Carlsen
ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KOAT/CNN) - An Albuquerque mom is being hailed a hero for stopping an out-of-control bus full of kids.
She hopped onto the moving bus with the help of a student when she noticed the driver was having a medical emergency.
Rhonda Carlsen said she did what any parent would do. But those who saw her take action said it was nothing short of heroic.
"This was a moving bus. It wasn't stopping," Carlsen said.
She was waiting with her children at their neighborhood's bus top, when the driver didn't stop, but rolled past the kids. Her other daughter noticed right away.
"She just yelled to me 'mom something's not right with our bus driver,'" Carlsen said.
Without hesitation, Rhonda sprinted after the bus.
"As the bus is just going, I'm running I'm running to the bus and I could see he's having a seizure."
The door was shut, and the bus was full of frightened kids, buts he made eye contact with a third grader in the front seat.
"I just was pointing to where he could open the door and I just said pull this open the door, grab that," Carlsen said.
He did, and she jumped onto the bus, put her foot on the brake and turned off the ignition.
Another mother called 911 and so did a student.
"I'm just so thankful that it happened in our neighborhood 'cause it could have been a lot worse if it was on a busier street, if it happened when they got to school and kids were nearby," Carlsen said.
She visited the bus driver at the hospital, and his family told her the first thing he asked was if they kids were alright.
