Tracey Betts Arrested After Naked Daughter, 12, Found Eating Out Of Trash Cans

TEMECULA, Calif. – Authorities say a naked 12-year-old girl was discovered eating food out of trash cans in Temecula and her mother has been arrested on suspicion of child endangerment.

Riverside County sheriff's officials say when police responded to a 911 call Thursday, they found the girl in a car where she was allegedly left by her 40-year-old mother, who was later arrested.

Dominique Prado tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise that she and her husband were in their yard when they saw the girl rooting through a trash can.

The girl was found in a BMW with tinted windows around the corner from the Prado's home.

Prado says the girl was struggling to cover herself with a floor mat from the vehicle. She gave her an apple, children's snacks and a bottle of water.

The girl is in protective custody

A naked 12-year-old girl was spotted eating food out of trash cans in California Thursday after neighbours said they saw her wandering the streets with only a car mat covering her.
The girl’s mother, 40-year-old Tracy Lynn Betts was said to have taken her daughter’s shoes and clothes in an effort to keep her from leaving her BMW, police said.
Betts was taken into custody and later arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment.

The girl told authorities that her mother works as a teacher’s assistant at Vail Elementary. Betts allegedly took her daughter’s shoes and clothes so she couldn’t leave the car.
Neighbours said they found the girl rummaging through their trash can, trying to cover herself with a floor mat from the car.
Avenida de Calazada resident Dominique Prado told the Press-Enterprise that she and her husband were in their yard when they saw the girl rooting through a trash can.
Ms Prado says she gave her an apple, children's snacks and a bottle of water.
Deputies found the child sitting famished in the car.

I'm glad the second article straightened out the question of whether Prado was the mother.

Betts is out of a job. I can't wait to hear just why she wanted to confine her daughter, starving, to her car. The fact she wanted to make her stay in it, and therefore took her clothes is bad enough, I know, but just why would she want her to stay there? Was that "her room"?

A Temecula teaching assistant accused of leaving her naked 12-year-old daughter to wait in a parked car while she worked has been charged with misdemeanor child endangerment, authorities said.

Temecula Valley Unified School District officials have said Betts had worked as a Vail teaching assistant since 2005. District spokeswoman Melanie Norton said Betts has been on paid administrative leave. It was not immediately clear how that status will change now that a criminal charge has been filed against her.

The child was placed in protective custody in February, sheriff’s officials said, but information about her current status was not immediately available.

Sheriff’s officials said at the time that there were no signs of other mistreatment.

Murrieta police said the girl had run away from home in the past and had been found wandering the city in her pajamas in December.

If convicted, Betts faces up to one year in jail.

Investigators turned the case over to the D.A.’s office, seeking charges against Betts within a couple weeks of her arrest.

However, prosecutors returned the case to the sheriff’s department for further investigation, eventually culminating in the filing of the misdemeanor allegation.
