BIG SCRUB – A 20-year-old man accused of having sex with a 9-year-old boy on several occasions was arrested late Wednesday night and charged with five counts of capital sexual battery, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
James Michael Cooper's girlfriend told detectives that early Wednesday morning, she was sleeping at her boyfriend's home in Umatilla when she woke up and walked into the living room and saw Cooper having sex with the boy. The girlfriend, who lives in Sumter County, left the home and reported the crime to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, which reported it to the Marion County officials.
Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office went to the location in Umatilla to look for Cooper, but he had left. He was eventually found in Umatilla.
Detectives first interviewed the victim, who told them that on Tuesday he had spent the evening with Cooper. The boy said sex acts had occurred that night and on Sunday in the shed.
They interviewed Cooper. He reportedly told detectives he is bisexual and that two weeks ago he had oral sex with the little boy. He admitted abusing the boy on Sunday and acknowledged that his girlfriend came in and found in the act Wednesday morning, according to the Sheriff's Office report.
Cooper was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail.
When a reporter asked Cooper at the jail if he could interview him, Cooper declined the request.
Weeping, Cooper said, "I want to go home to my Mommy."
