ADELANTO — A mother of eight with multiple convictions is under arrest after authorities found her children living in unsanitary conditions on Monday, authorities said.

Along with the latest charges of willful cruelty to a child, Karrie Collins, 31 of Adelanto, has had at least 10 convictions including battery, failing to get her children to school, and hit and run, according to court documents.

Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Adelanto station were called to Westside Park Elementary after school officials suspected neglect and abuse of three siblings, according to Staci Johnson, spokesperson for the Adelanto station.

Deputy Simon De Muri waited for Collins at the school, but when she failed to pick the kids up, De Muri drove the children to their home in the 10900 block of Aztec Lane, officials said. There he found the other five children being watched by a baby sitter in unsanitary conditions.

According to De Muri, there was trash all over the living room and two young children were lying on the floor near some animal feces.

A more thorough search showed that there was very little food in the home and the gas had been shut off, authorities said.

Collins is set to be arraigned on July 16 on charges of improper occupancy and hazardous electrical wiring, according to court documents.

All eight children ranging in age from 10 months to 13 years old were turned over to Child Protective Services and Collins was arrested for child endangerment.

The City of Adelanto Code Enforcement Division determined that the home was uninhabitable due to unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
Collins was charged with five counts of willful cruelty to a child with possible injury or death in April 2005, but those charges were dismissed, according to officials.

Sure would like to know why those 2005 charges were dropped. Hope whoever fucked that up gets a good old-fashioned "what for".

She must have thought she was untouchable because she skated previously.

The "babysitter" should have been called in as well. While perhaps that sitter may not be able to make a huge dent in the situation, she didn't need to a.) watch the kids there and b.) sit there and let the mess continue, at least she could've been at least somewhat of an adult.

The babysitter may have been young - like 14 - and only there for the youngest. He/She may not have been aware that the mess was something wrong or to be reported.

Maybe not - just a possibility that justifies for my own mind as to why she didn't call.

Why are there always animal feces? In every report of unsanitary conditions there's always poop everywhere- sometimes inches thick! Who lets their babies lay on the floor next to a pile of shit?

Even a damn 14 yr old knows how to clean up after herself. Apparently this babysitter just added to the situation from what I can tell. However the parents will probably be told to submit a list of "acceptable" child care people (friends, family, etc)... then go meddle and muck around in their lives for abit and see what else they can find and how much more damage..... okay, some bitterness there.

Anyhow.... animal feces... Apparently dirty people are horders... and animals are difficult to keep up with, and if you can't... well it just snowballs from there is my guess.
