STOCKTON, Calif. -- An Amber Alert was issued Thursday for a girl reported abducted from Stockton who may be with a man police identified as a registered sex offender.

Police were searching for 12-year-old Angelica Marie Wylie, who was allegedly kidnapped at around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

She is 5 feet 1 inch tall, 115 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing a gray shirt, dark blue jeans and black Vans shoes. She was wearing a white metal necklace that contains a white stone. She has a ponytail.

Police identified the accused kidnapper as 71-year-old Billy Don Potts, who the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department said is a sex offender.

Potts was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and 165 pounds. He has gray hair and blue eyes. His vehicle was found abandoned.

Details were sketchy Thursday afternoon, but the sheriff's department said Potts was possibly last seen at the Food 4 Less store on Wilson Way in Stockton.

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A registered sex offender was charged Thursday with sexual assault on a girl whom he allegedly abducted in Stockton, police said.

Billy Don Potts, 71, remains on the loose and is considered to be armed and dangerous.

There is a $1 million arrest warrant out for Potts, police said.

The 12-year-old walked home and was being questioned by police Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

She allegedly was kidnapped on Wednesday evening, authorities said, but the incident was not reported to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department until Thursday morning.

Police said the girl and her family had been staying with Potts.

Potts was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and 165 pounds. He has gray hair and blue eyes. His maroon Dodge Dakota truck was found abandoned at a Food 4 Less store on Wilson Way in Stockton.

Police said some ammunition was found in the truck, leading police to suspect Potts is armed. Potts also withdrew $5,000 from a bank Thursday morning.

Potts may now be driving a full-size tan van with chrome stripes on the sides and windows covered with cloth shades, police said.

Investigators did not release any details about how the alleged abduction occurred.

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A man who told police he was wanted registered sex offender Billy Potts shot himself to death when confronted by an officer on Friday morning, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol said an officer found a van in Stockton that matched the vehicle Potts was last seen driving.

Police said the CHP officer walked up the van and asked the man for a name. The man said, "Billy Potts.

"The officer asked him if he was OK and the man said, "Yes."

When the officer turned to walk away, a shot rang out. The man had turned a gun on himself, police said.

The officer returned and found the man dead. The officer called emergency personnel for help.

The article suggests that the cop went up to the van because it "matched the vehicle Potts was last seen driving"--thus, it would seem the cop knew to be looking for someone named Billy Potts. NO WAY would he casually turn his back on the guy. Give Billy a suggestion about what to do with the gun in his possession? Hm, that sounds more likely.
