The calm of an East Memphis neighborhood turned into terror Monday night, as police believe a mother stabbed her two young sons, then inflicted critical injuries on herself.
Neighbors identified the victims as Nolan Joyner, 3, and his brother, Hudson, 11 months, both of whom suffered serious cuts. Their mother, Monica Joyner, 31, also was injured, but police believe her cuts were self-inflicted.
On Tuesday, Monica Joyner was at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis in critical condition, and her sons were in critical condition at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, police said.
Joyner's husband was away during the attacks, police said. Neighbors said Rob Joyner often travels for his job at a local clothing store.
A Memphis police investigation is continuing, said spokeswoman Monique Martin, and investigators haven't been able to talk with Monica Joyner because of her injuries.
The case has been assigned to the child abuse squad.
