LAKELAND | Acting on a tip from a resident, Polk Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a 15-year-old Lakeland youth Wednesday night and charged him with desecrating tombstones at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said today that Joshua Wayne Boyce, of 720 Angelina Lane, was arrested at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Boyce told detectives that during the late night hours of June 6 or June 7, he and two friends jumped the fence at the cemetery, located at 3125 W. Socrum Loop Road after seeing a fox run through the property, the sheriff’s office said.
Despite warnings from his friends, Boyce began toppling over the tombstones, eventually knocking down 27, the sheriff’s office said. Boyce told detectives he did it for entertainment and to amuse his friends.
Boyce was charged with 27 counts of injuring or removing a tomb or monument and disturbing the contents of a grave or tomb. The charges are third-degree felonies, the sheriff’s office said. He was processed through the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Juvenile Assessment Center, and released.
