A 25-year-old from Margate was arrested Wednesday after police said he threatened, on his MySpace.com page, to go on a shooting spree at the Coral Springs Police Department.
Jean Carlos Vargas was booked into Broward County's main jail on Wednesday night, charged with writing threats to kill and do bodily harm.
McHugh wouldn't detail what Vargas told police, but he did say that Vargas made the spontaneous statement, ``I did something really stupid.''
Vargas has one prior arrest, in 2006, for discharging a firearm, according to Broward court records. He pleaded no contest.
Here is the account McHugh gave of what happened Wednesday:
In the morning, Coral Springs police got a tip about the threat on Vargas' MySpace page. Police found the page and saw the written threats, along with a picture of Vargas pointing a gun straight ahead.
''It actually said that he was going to go on a shooting spree at CSPD,'' McHugh said.
Investigators connected the page to Vargas and began searching for him. Meanwhile, armed officers were stationed outside all police and fire department buildings in Coral Springs.
''Not only a threat like that but a picture with a gun in his hand -- it definitely raises everybody's alert level,'' McHugh said.
Police found Vargas at about 3:30 p.m., and pulled him over. Vargas cooperated with investigators, giving them a statement, but McHugh wouldn't elaborate.
Vargas also told police where they could find the gun pictured on the MySpace page, McHugh said.
By Wednesday night, his MySpace page was gone. McHugh said it was taken down and submitted as evidence.
Meanwhile, family members struggled to understand the situation.
Vargas was a nice kid who hadn't known what he was doing, said his brother, José Vargas, 20.
Of police allegations that Jean Vargas had threatened to shoot police, José Vargas said: ``He would never do that. It was just a joke.
``He's innocent.''

Yep...no argument here. He's stupid.
