Touching ... elephant herd say goodbye to Lola

THE lifeless body of baby elephant Lola is nuzzled by her bereaved herd in a moving farewell at a zoo.

Three-months-old Lola had a heart defect, and The Sun told on Saturday how she was due for groundbreaking surgery. But she died during a CT scan ahead of the op.

Her body was returned to Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich, Germany so mum Panang and the rest of the elephants could say a final goodbye.

Elephant herd grieves for baby who died of a heart defect

This is the moving moment a grieving herd of elephants said their goodbyes to a little calf who tragically died of a serious heart defect.
Baby Lola was due to be the world’s first elephant to have heart surgery to remove a blood clot.
But the three-month-old calf sadly passed away on Saturday during a preliminary CT scan.
Keepers at Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich decided to return the baby’s body to the elephant enclosure so mum Panang, 22, could grieve in peace.
The rest of the herd then took it in turns to nuzzle the animal’s lifeless body
Lola’s death will come as a blow to the staff at the zoo, who had all been charmed by the baby elephant.
Speaking last week, zoo director Andreas Knieriem said: “The specialists say that this very difficult operation is Lola’s only hope, so we must do it

Elephants are my favorite animal. It started when I was little and saw how strong and emotional their family is with one another.

It started with the cute story back in 2010, I think it was CBS, about how this elephant and dog became best friends.

Elephants do cry real tears! It's so sad. I have had animals go into mourning when one of them passes. One of our cats was hit by a car out at the street. Our oldest cat stayed with his body until we moved it. And our other cat, his best buddy, is a feisty little shit and bad ass hunter, but he laid on top of the refrigerator for a week, only moving to go to the bathroom, eat, and drink. He missed his pal.

We have an almost 13 year old rottie, who is the big mama of the house. I can't even imagine what is going to happen when she passes.

I haven't touched meat since I read that god awful story of the mama bear killing her cub then herself. Stories like this make it easier for me to keep going the veggie route!

when our husky was 15 she went and the cats that have been with her all the years were depressed and moped around
They still sleep in her spot they always shared with her

Aw, so sad. I love elephants.
My grandmother had them all over her home (nothing ivory), lovely statues in honor of them. They are huge, lumbering animals yet walk with beauty and grace; we have much to learn from them. I was surprised to learn Elephants are very loving, nurturing animals, very social and family oriented--sensitive animals where if a baby complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch and caress it, much like you see on the video.

"Whether sad, angry, distressed, eager, or playful, elephants are this in a big way". ~Joyce Poole quoted in the Fate of The Elephant.

Farewell Lola.

Ugh. I fear this is going to happen when our Rottie passes. We got her at six weeks old, back in '99, and she has moved all over the country with us. She is the best dog in the world, and the unavoidable is unthinkable. Ugh!

On a lighter note, we have two ten week old Huskies! Caden wanted a dog for his birthday since his other had been stolen the Thanksgiving in 2010. They are already beasts. We got them at 3 1/2 weeks old, because the idiot was selling them that young and we didn't want them going to people who don't know how to raise dogs that young.
