Police: Woman Was Huffing Behind The Wheel

Police say a woman who crashed into a building in Kinston was inhaling toxic vapors from an aerosol can when the accident happened.
A building being renovated to be a church now has a lot of clean up after a car crashed into it Wednesday afternoon.

Police say 24-year-old Krystal Jones was "huffing," or inhaling toxic vapors from an aerosol can, when she crashed into a building in Kinston Wednesday. Jones crashed into what used to be the Family Pet Shop on West Vernon Avenue.

[...]
Police say she's charged with careless and reckless driving, driving left of the center line and for inhaling toxic vapors. Officers say she can not be charged with DWI because it is an instant high and goes away quickly so there is no way to test for it.http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/137166513.html

Once again, absolutely amazing, Whisper. Not that far from me and the news makes it to Canadia before it makes it 2 hours south...

This recently happened in my area. A girl was huffing while driving, lost consciousness and hit 2 pedestrians, putting at least one of them into a coma. If people really feel the need to huff, why can't they just pull over? I understand (NOT condone) needing to get home at the end of the night and not having time to sober up after drinking, but it only takes about 5 minutes to recover from inhalants so this is just baffling. People are so lazy today. Hurting yourself is one thing, but don't drag other people down with you.

What about DUI? They should've been able to drill her with that. I mean, really, if they can prove that she was, in fact, "huffing" at any time while driving, they really should be able to hit her with both DWI and DUI, regardless of how long the "high" last as she would've been high while driving, even if only for a few minutes...

In the case in Lowell the girl's main charges were just assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle despite the fact that one person is in the coma, and the only pedestrian broke her leg and requires brain surgery. The max sentences for either of those won't be nearly enough to account for two lives potentially destroyed, whether they live or not. Laws do have to be by the book so judges don't have too much power, but this is one of those cases that I wish they could tack years on to her sentence for being a horribly selfish bitch.

Here's a link to that case if anyone's interested...

Kinston, NC - According to police, Krystal Jones, 24, was preoccupied by her huffing when she drove her car into a building in Kinston, North Carolina. The building – which had reportedly been a pet store – was being renovated to become a church. More ‘renovation’ is now needed, as Jones squarely smashed it all to hell. Jones was jailed on a $1,000 bond and, at last report, was still in custody. Police charged her with careless and reckless driving, driving left of the center line and inhaling toxic vapors. The ‘driving left of the center line’ thing may seem like grasping. It turns out that some grasping was necessary as, North Carolina authorities say, she can not be charged with DWI because the physiological artifacts of huffing dissipate too quickly for impairment to be established post-incident. It is unfortunate that – apparently – driving through a freakin’ building isn’t a crime… That said, the fact of the matter is that this incident turned out*comparatively*well. This case comes on the heals of a couple of more tragic cases. Last October in Lowell, Massachusetts, Catherine Gaudette, 17, was reported to be huffing when she hit pedestrians Doris Milagro-Ortiz, 45, and Tina Phoeuth, 22, on a Sunday afternoon. Gaudette and two male juveniles, were allegedly inhaling computer keyboard cleaner with difluoroethane at the time of the crash. Ortiz ended up in a coma. Phoebuth didn’t – but wasn’t that much better off. Gaudette was served a summons at her high school charging her with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, impeded operation, failure to slow for a pedestrian, operating at speed greater than reasonable and failure to drive in marked lanes. That same month in Syracuse, Aaron Sakran, 20, was huffing difluoroethane-laced compressed air moments before he ran down and killed pedestrian, Joseph Ozimek III, 19. I say it this way because Sakran admitted it in court last month. Authorities said that, just after midnight on the morning of October 5, Ozimek was walking home from his job at the nearby McDonald’s restaurant when he was run down by Sakran. Sakran pleaded guilty to a single felony count of second-degree manslaughter. It was reported that Sakran could have faced up to 15 years in state prison for the manslaughter charge, but the agreement brought the sentence down to 2 1/3 toKeep Reading...
