A 44-year-old Boca Raton man with a Florida rap sheet dating nearly two decades has been charged with viciously beating his 75-year-old mother and trying to smother her with a pillow.
Mitchell Lawrence Bernstein, according to a police report, is an alcoholic who had been drinking all day Friday when he punched his mother in the face and pushed her around her apartment on Northeast 20th Street. He then grabbed her arms and ordered her to her bedroom, where he pushed her onto the bed and hit her several times before putting a pillow over her face and trying to smother her, the report said.
She was able to free herself, but Bernstein chased after her and slammed her head against a door and pushed her across a glass table, causing it to shatter. The report stated that Bernstein ultimately calmed down and allowed the victim to tend to her injuries. Because Bernstein had broken the victim's phone, she had to leave to call for help.
When police arrived, they found the apartment in disarray with broken glass and blood throughout the home. The victim had numerous cuts, scrapes and bruises all over her body. Bernstein told police he had a confrontation with his mother but refused to provide further details.
Bernstein faces charges of attempted murder, battery on a person 65 or older and abuse of an elderly person. He's being held in the Palm Beach County Jail without bond.
