Sheriff’s deputies in Linn County have arrested a man on mistreatment charges in connection with the death of his 83-year-old mother.
Douglas Dwight DeHaven, 55, of Harrisburg, was booked into the Linn County Jail on a charge of first-degree criminal mistreatment, the sheriff’s office said.
He allegedly left his injured mother, Virginia Katherine Bryant, lying on her bedroom floor after finding her there on Nov. 7, the agency said.
He told deputies that his mother said she was lying on the floor because her back hurt, the agency said.
When he checked on her the next day, she was unresponsive, a sheriff’s office report said. He allegedly didn’t check on her for two more days and found her dead at 5 p.m. on Nov. 10, the report said.
The report said Bryant was covered in fecal matter and bodily fluids and had large pressure sores on her body.

DeHaven told investigators that he was his mother’s care provider and lived with her. He didn’t hold a care license through the state Department of Human Services, a DHS spokesman said.
Preliminary autopsy results showed the cause of her death to be heart disease. Additional lab tests are pending, said Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller.
“She had a pressure sore on her hip about the size of a Volkswagen hubcap,” Mueller said. “I can’t imagine her back hurting more than an open wound that size going clear down to the muscle.”
Bryant’s neighbors said she’d been bedridden since September.http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2011/11/harrisburg_man_charged_with_ne.html
Deputies found Bryant deceased, lying on the bedroom floor. She was covered in feces and other body fluids. Mueller said there were sores over much of her body and a massive, infected wound on her hip.
DeHaven, a local truck driver, was his mother’s primary caregiver. He told investigators his mother was difficult to be around, which is why his wife and daughter, who also live at the residence, did not have much contact with her.
DeHaven told deputies he had checked on his mother on Monday, Nov. 7, and found her lying on her bedroom floor. He said she told him she was on the floor because her back hurt. He left her there and reportedly took sheets off the bed so they could be laundered.
DeHaven said he checked on his mother again the next day, but when he shook her she was unresponsive. He told detective Sally Jo Donahue that his mother was warm, but he did not check her pulse or lean close to see if she was breathing.

“The case has been sent to the District Attorney’s office for review and there could be other charges coming,” Sheriff Mueller said.http://www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/son-faces-charge-of-mistreatment/article_4bd730c4-22d7-5080-a589-fb21ea572b3e.html
