A mother left homeless by a fire is accused of trying to smother her infant at Buffalo's Women and Children's Hospital.

Marcia Mitchell, 27, of Batavia, pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder in City Court on Saturday morning and is being held.

Buffalo police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said the infant, a 7-month-old girl, is doing OK and remains in the hospital.

Police were called to the hospital about 6:50 p.m. Friday when the staff reported a woman had tried to smother a baby with a pillow. Homicide detectives were called later.

DeGeorge said Mitchell is married and has other children but no other family members were with her at the time. She had been staying in the room with her sick baby.

Police list Mitchell as having no permanent address because a fire ruined the family's Batavia home in April. DeGeorge said Mitchell, her husband and their other children have been moving between relatives' and friends' homes since then.

To be honest, it appears that Mom having been suffering from Depression for awhile (and doing what is needed to follow up with it) may have just been really having a problem. Check out this article, while it isn't an excuse or reason, it may give more insight on the situation.

I read that article earlier today. I just don't think that a dead baby would have fixed the depression....
I've been down and out, I've been depressed, I've had shit going on in my life at one time that would put other's in a straight jacket...but I have NEVER once thought of harming or killing my child to make things easier.

Again, I am not saying that I justify anything that has happened in this case. However, post partum depression, can be really strong. For those that have depression serious enough for medical interventions and medications, it is a scary place to be. During the darker times, there are a lot of things that will go through the mind/thoughts of a person severely depressed that normally wouldn't go through. No it does not make sense, I agree in a lot of ways, especially since most depressed people do irrational things (such as suicide and homicide). But coming from a Bi-Polar and Borderline Personality perspective of things, when the darkest hours come, sometimes even the most desperate irrational thing does make sense. Sick as that may sound.
