A 31-year-old East Helena man, who came to the attention of law enforcement officials during an alleged domestic dispute with his wife, pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to receiving and possessing child pornography.
Barry Armbrister is in custody, awaiting sentencing on Sept. 24. He faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, and possibly up to 20 years, as well as a $250,000 fine and a lifetime under supervision.
According to information from the U.S. Attorney’s office, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Armbrister residence in the 2700 block of Wylie Drive in East Helena on April 11, 2007, to investigate a report of domestic violence. Once there, Armbrister’s wife said he had grabbed her and thrown her against the wall when she tried to talk to him about a picture he had posted of himself on a computer site.
When the probation officer who had been supervising Armbrister arrived at the home, he searched Armbrister’s car and found a letter from a girl named Rachel, which included sexual insinuations about a trip Armbrister planned for Niagra Falls later that year.
Armbrister’s wife said she didn’t know anything about Rachel. When the probation officer mentioned that Armbrister would be in big trouble if Rachel was younger than 18 and had sent any explicit photos of herself to Armbrister, the wife said she knew Arbrister had a sexual interest in little girls. In fact, she said, Armbrister had hundreds of pictures of young girls on his computer, according to court records.
The officer seized the computers, and the next day Armbrister’s wife brought the officer three computer disks that she said contained pictures of children in sexually explicit acts.
In a later interview, the wife allegedly told the officer that she had observed Armbrister engage in sexual acts with female children both in his residence and in vehicles, and that when her two girls were 14 and 7, they told her Armbrister had molested them. She added that Armbrister had viewed child pornography at least eight years previously at another residence, and currently continued to collect and watch child porn on their home computer, according to court documents.
