Police say two men charged with killing a Davenport man last week are loosely related to a young woman the victim was convicted of sexually abusing in 2000.
Hano Bailey, 41, was shot five times May 22 while going to work at the International House of Pancakes. Police Capt. David Struckman said Bailey may have been shot because of "some activities like that in the past.''
Capt. Struckman said police are working on solidifying a motive, but said it might be related to Mr. Bailey's 2000 conviction for third-degree sexual abuse and the then 17-year-old girl he was convicted of sexually abusing.
Two Davenport men, Oliver Litt and Alfred Demond Brown made first court appearances Friday morning on charges of first-degree murder.
“Obviously you're a danger to the community,” Associate Court Judge Mary Howes told Brown at his first court appearance. Seemingly aloof, Brown gave short answers to the judge's questions. He became upset and questioned the judge when she set bail at $1 million. A woman stormed out of the courtroom, slamming the door behind her.
According to affidavits filed in court, Litt and Brown sat in a parked car outside the restaurant waiting for Bailey to arrive at work. Bailey's family said he'd been working at IHOP since his release from prison in March.
When Bailey arrived at the restaurant, Litt got out of the car and shot Bailey at close range with a handgun. He then got back into the car with Brown and sped off.
After he was arrested Thursday evening at his home, Litt admitted he'd shot Bailey.
Day Day Howard, Bailey's brother, said he hung out with both Litt and Brown, but never heard of anything regarding any kind of revenge plot or bad blood for the two men and his brother.
“They never had anything with my brother until this incident,” he said. “They knew he was part of the family.”
It's a family known to Davenport police. Three members of the family have been murdered in the last eight years.
Brown and Litt – whose criminal records include robbery, theft, domestic violence, willful injury, eluding police, assault and weapons-related offenses – remained in the Scott County Jail late Friday on $1 million each.http://www.qconline.com/archives/qco/display.php?id=389106
