SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Police were led to a home in Syracuse after a 9-year-old girl was reported missing early Monday morning, a home of a registered sex offender.
Syracuse Police Sergeant Gary Bulinski said, "The mother, who is obviously a very loving mother and good mother. She happened to check on her daughter, roughly around 2 in the morning. She poked her head in the bedroom and realized that both the window and the screen were open, and her daughter was missing."
McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Julie Cecile said, "It's not frequent. This is an usual case that somebody was actually abducted from their bedroom and taken to a level three sex offender's house."
Tommy Lee Baker, 54, is a family acquaintance of the victim and is accused of luring the child out of her home. When police confronted him, Baker denied having any information.
"He told police he had no knowledge of the girl or her whereabouts," Bulinski said.
Police found the victim in the sex offender's bedroom and she was taken to the hospital.
About 90 percent of kids who are abused are abused by those they know. Child advocates say parents should reinforce basic safety rules like never going anywhere alone and always asking a parent for permission before going anywhere. Those simple rules could save a child from a traumatic situation.
Cecile said, "Every day there are teaching moments for our children, so hopefully parents and care-givers and guardians have those teaching moments, not to scare the children, but to make them feel secure."
Police say in this situation, the 9-year-old victim is lucky she's safe.
Bulinski said, "They had this resolved in such a short period of time that really kept the girl safe. Had this dragged out over a long period of time, who knows what could have happened."
Child advocates say parents can take extra steps to protect their kids by going online and finding out if any registered sex offenders live in or near their neighborhood and always keeping the lines of communication open.
