Sue O'Dell said a decision by students to elect Maisie Garoutte prom queen didn't surprise her.
Maisie, a senior with Down syndrome, is well-known and liked by students and faculty in the Fair Grove district, said O'Dell, who has had the 19-year-old in her life skills classes since Maisie was in fifth grade.
"All the kids know her, the community knows her," O'Dell said.
"She's been in all the school plays; she has been since middle school."
Along with her classroom studies, Maisie carries out a variety of other jobs at school, O'Dell said.
She delivers school mail to teachers and is the school door greeter, she said.
While Maisie was crowned during the prom at the 425 DownTown banquet hall in Springfield April 30, she didn't let the celebrating end when the evening concluded.
Maisie wore her crown to school on Monday, O'Dell said.
"She's just wonderful," O'Dell said of her student. "Everybody should have a Maisie in their life."
