North Bergen man charged with sex crimes against 13-year-old girl, assistant prosecutor says
A North Bergen man was arrested this week and charged with sex crimes against a 13-year-old girl after neighbors who heard the victim's screams subdued the man before police arrived on the scene, authorities said.
Santiago Farino, 50, assaulted the girl in her own bedroom on April 25, according to Hudson County Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon. Farino was a friend of the victim's family, and may have lived in the same apartment, Simon said.
The suspect attempted to have intercourse with the victim, who screamed so loud during the attack that neighbors heard and attempted to rescue her, Simon said.
"She was putting up a real fight," she said.
Farino tried to flee the building when the neighbors tackled him, sending the three tumbling down a flight of stairs, according to Simon. As the good Samaritans attempted to subdue the suspect, he tried to headbutt one of them and again attempted to flee the building when police arrived, she said.
Farino is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on police offices and two counts of simple assault against the neighbors, authorities said.
The suspect's bail was set at $150,000 cash or bond. Simon said she couldn't determine where the suspect was this afternoon.
" I can't imagine he's not in jail," she said.
In another case, a Jersey City man was charged with sex crimes against a 10-year-old girl he would make sit on his lap.
Richard Thomas, 34, was known to the victim's family, according to Simon, who said the attacks likely occurred multiple times between June 2010 and April 6, 2011.
Thomas was arrested on April 25 and charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse, authorities said.
