Louisville, Kentucky -- A 16-year-old girl had her feet severed after a ride she was on malfunctioned. The Superman Tower of Power, a ride in which passengers are lifted to 177 feet, suspended momentarily and then dropped 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping just 20 feet above the pavement. Witnesses describe hearing a cable snap and then strike passengers.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up,"

An anonymous witness stated "The people on the ride just came and hit the ground. When I got up there, the lady she was just sitting there, and she didn't have no legs. ... And she was just there, calm, probably in shock from everything."

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride was shut down until a full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

First there was Chelsea Tumbleston, who fell off a roof and died, and now you have this girl who had both feet cut off. It has been revealed her name is Kaitlyn Lasitter.

What are the chances?

Holy christ. From a snapped cable? And to think, I felt relieved after Myth Busters "proved" that a snapped cable couldn't cut a person in half...Being dismembered isn't much better.

Perhaps the Myth Busters need to retest.

It seems that the victim was planning to go after Six Flags with a very aggressive lawsuit...

... but her legal advice was that she really didn't have a leg to stand on.

Four mechanical arms welded right onto his body. What are the odds? :D

An intelligent girlfriend?!? Poor chap. That's the only thing worse than a dumb girlfriend. :P

I must say, however, that when it comes to the issue of pictures, my interest is piqued.

On that last note, ZB...The last time I went on a ride, it was the exact same type of ride that injured this girl. After reading this, that may just be the last time I went on a ride.

A travelling carnival came to town last weekend. It was my birthday on Saturday (I know, too kind, eh? Still can't figure out which modest friend sent the carnival). So we went, to be nice, and I have to say... travelling carnival rides are way scarier than any Six Flags bullshit. There is something about a drunk, unshaven man in a wife-beater running the Tilt-a-Whirl that is more heart-racing than an inverted loop.

Speaking of scary, you'll have to talk to Morbid about the samurai pic. Rumor is, he took the old site down and replaced it with this piece of shit just so he could have that picture all to himself.

Funny though - I have pictures of Stoney's ape ass on every computer I've encountered for any length of time in the last 4 years. There comes an occasional (comical) need for a picture of a furry ass, y'know?!

Kaitlyn Lasitter had her right foot re-attached by doctors, but the left foot was too damaged to be saved.

Kaitlyn Lasitter remained in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Douglas Weikert, a surgeon and assistant professor at Vanderbilt, said in the statement. "Things are progressing as expected over this first 10 days," he said.

I posted this in the distasteful jokes thread as well, and before I knew about the foot being reattached:

Have you heard about the girl who got her feet cut off at Six Flags? Well as compensation they were going to give her a lifetime membership to the park, but then they realized she was 2 feet too short to ride the rides.

With the unfortunate amount of narcotics in her system for pain I guess I find myself in a position to cruise around the internet to find all the distasteful remarks from people and I felt compelled to respond to a few. Don't get me wrong , in the real scheme of things your comments have no bearing on our lives, but it's amazing to see the Shit people have to say. And with a computer in her room I will never be leaving her room.

So wait. Your daughter is the one with the severed feet, 613? And you're trolling the internet to berate people for having a bit of fun. What a waste of time.

Let me ask you - if the shoe was on the other foot (Ha!) and it was someone else's kid with the missing feet, you wouldn't at least make a few harmless jokes about it? Something tells me you would. Everything is funny until it hits close to home and then you're offended. Give me a fucking break!

*Edit* Life is cruel - I know this well. If you don't lighten up and let the absurdity of it all slide off your back, you are going to die young and unhappy. I'm sorry for what happened to your daughter (if your story is genuine) but lashing out at people who are seeing the lighter side of life is sad and pointless. Enjoy your misery! You seem to love wallowing in it.

While normally I discount posts like this actually being from anyone involved with the actual event, but in this case, I am pretty sure you may actually be who you say you are.

With that being said, let me be the first to let you know that you have my deepest sympathies in regards to your daughter. I hope that she, and the rest of her family, are able to get through all of this with as little ill-effects as possible. I am a parent as well, and could somewhat imagine the nightmare this entire event is putting everyone through.

That being said, this site, and others like it, are geared towards people with a morbid sense of humor and deal with tragedy, grief, death, etc by injecting humor into it. For some people, whether anyone agrees with it or not, it is pretty much the only way they can read the news any longer.

Many routes could have been taken in this forum after the incident was posted. As usual in events that are horrific, some will post echoing the horrific nature of the incident, others will post similar experiences, and in almost every case...jokes will be made. This is just a fact of life. Whether it be the Benoit case, the Vaughn family or your daughter, humor will be found. Those other events do not effect you in any way, so I understand why you are not on any moral high horse on their cases and making posts in those threads...but to come across as someone who has never in their entire life, ever made an off-color remark, or laughed at an offensive joke, or even made a crack at someone else's expense...well then you are either a hypocrite or Jesus Christ himself.

You can believe it or not, but the majority of the members of this site, including myself, wish nothing but the best for your daughter. I would not wish what happened to your daughter on my worst enemy. I know how any of us feel about you or your family at this point (or any), means fuck-all to you (nor should you), but it's the truth. No one here is evil, or cold-hearted, or wish ill-will on anyone, but we do make light of tragic events, and if anything fantastically tragic were to ever happen to myself or members of my family, I would expect no less.

If this is bullshit, and I am wrong about who you are...well, no matter really, as eventually someone close to an event we post on will end up finding this place (god knows how) instead of Fark's - "Girl defeeted by Six Flags ride" (http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=2884023) for example, and I will just point back to this thread when it does.

No need to apologize. Going through what you are, had I came across a forum in which people were making light of a traumatic situation I was going through, I cannot say I wouldn't have responded in a similar fashion, and even for us that are used to these types of forums, It is not out of the norm for some of us to be repulsed by comments made in certain scenarios.

I truly do hope everything works out for you guys, and while I cannot promise that people will stop cracking jokes...especially when dealing with some people's fear\worry of amusement park rides, I do want you to know that I really do wish your entire family well.

I also know that this wont help what you have already been through, but if Six Flags is shown to have demonstrated any negligence with that ride or its operations, that they are held accountable for it.

613
July 4th, 2007, 05:31 PM
Trust that they are negligent and will definitely be held accountable. Ride operators had the ability to stop the ride after being told of a malfunction by adults watching the ride but chose to continue without regard. KK is trying to hide these statements but they will ultimately come to light. However the Young persons operating these rides are not at fault as they were set up for failure from the beginning. We need to have a better system of education for these unfortunate accidents. Thanks for your kind words.

What did the spectators notice? Was it something visual? The eyewitness accounts are also confusing in regards to when the accident occurred. Was it before or after the drop? I am familiar with this type of attraction (we have one in Carowinds), but don't get when the cable snap happened.

Our understanding is it broke on the way up and was heard and some sort of burning smell was experienced. So the people told both operaters about it and one of them saw it and froze while the other one paid no mind to the people and refused to hit the "E" button for an emergency stop.

So, I am assuming that since the operator failed to hit the emergency stop, that the ride continued as normal? If so, did the injuries to Kaitlyn happen after the drop, or was she injured at the time of the initial break? Also, I apologize for asking too many questions...I had an experience on a coaster (posted a few pages back), and ever since, I have been semi-fascinated with the accident side of amusement parks. The severing happened on the way down. The cable actually wrapped around my daughter and her girlfriends neck right before it reached the top. Then according to my daughter something at the top broke off and (thank whoever) knocked her out cold. When she woke up she was at the bottom with no feet. Adding insult to injury we were told the people at the bottom were not prepared for this kind of situation and weren't acting fast enough in their guestimation.

Ok, thanks for answering those questions. I was confused about the order of events from the get-go. That clears everything up. That also explains the reports of your daughter "acting normal" at the bottom. The fact that she had been knocked out mixed with shock all makes sense now. Are there any speculation on the second foot possibly being able to be saved had the employees acted faster? Or is that way too early to know at this point?

I wonder what the parks guidelines are when operators are notified of something amiss? I know on some other sites, members were commenting on either having managed at a Six Flags park, or knew of a manager. While it is all rumor, of course, but the posts were basically describing Six Flags as hundred acre ATM machines that do just enough maintenance to keep it legal.

613
July 4th, 2007, 06:43 PM
The last bit of your comment is the way we understand the operation of this park as well. Unfortunately the damage was way too sever to her left foot for any re-attachment. Seems since this is a park that is closed down half the year the maintaining is at best mediocre.

Well, thankfully she wasn't killed. You guys also couldn't have been in a better place for this accident to happen as the area Kaitlyn is in has some of the best micro surgeons around.

Also, thought this was interesting as well:

The manufacturer of the Superman Tower of Power says it did not supply the cable that sliced off a girl's feet at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom on Thursday. The ride's cables and wire ropes would have had the need for replacement at least several times since the ride opened in 1995, but those replacement parts did not come from Intamin (http://www.intaminworldwide.com/). The company says it has not supplied parts for the ride for 13 years.

I am real curious when the cables were last replaced, and from whom the replacements came from if they were.

From my understanding they are supposed to be replaced every 2 years. Were scheduled for replacement in 2005 but said they were changed last in 2003. And Swiss company says they haven't sold any parts to the park in years.

The park is already acting...strange...in the fact that they stated publicly that they had been in constant contact with the family since the accident, but the family retorted that they had not been contacted by anyone from Six Flag's camp. 613 probably knows more about that, though, I just cannot remember which family member was quoted in the press.

I'll gladly (and humbly) contribute. Would there be some better use for the cost of the flowers? Is there a fund set up somewhere? The medical bills are presumably overwhelming. Whatever you need, we'll give. We're a small group, but we're all (fairly) intelligent and empathetic. We protect our own, and you've done so well at integrating yourself here that we'd be hard-pressed not to do something.

Our bank has set up a fund in the name of Kaitlyn Lasitter @ Class Act Federal Credit Union in Louisville, Kentucky. We don't expect anything, have never been the kind of people to ask for help but you're right the bills will add up, but as far as I'm concerned they're Six Flags bills. Although we have lost work now for 13 days and we are definitely of the Blue Collar persuasion and my wife has had to quit her job to be with our daughter full-time now, and the doctors and lawyer say this could surely last at least a year or two. Never have had time to sit and do this that much between work and family, and playing music but I have definitely enjoyed this encounter, thank you.

Hey guys\gals, I have the room number for Kaitlyn. She will probably be there until Friday, so I would like to get her something sent to her room. Before I did anything on behalf of myself I didn't know if any of you would like to chip in and we just address it with our names or something. She's 12, so I am assuming that balloons and stuffed animals are probably not out of the question.

The gift shop is on-line and accepts credit cards, so I can purchase it that way. The gift shop is here:

http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/root/vumc.php?site=giftshop

Any ideas?

Normally I would ever imagine doing something like this for every messed up story we feature on this site, but as you have read, things are a tad more personal with this and there is the fact that Kaitlyn's dad has not only posted here but has PM's me a couple of times. He seems like a pretty cool guy who along with his family and Kaitlyn, got some hurdles to get over in the upcoming days.

So, no need to feel obligated as I am doing this regardless..I just wanted to make sure that if anyone wanted to chip in, PM me. I'll probably do the purchasing on Sunday or Monday. If you would rather do something yourself, PM me or more preferably, 613, for her room number.

Which may be an even better idea in general. I am pretty sure Six Flags will be paying the family some money, but who knows how long that will take. I will probably contribute to that fund as well, but I still would like to give something specifically to the daughter, so I will still be ordering something on Sunday or Monday.

For the few people who have already PM'd me, I am not real sure how to go about it now that I think about it. I have a Paypal (linked above in the Wanna Help section) but only a few of you know me personally so I would understand your hesitation on just sending money to my Paypal account and hope I am doing what I say I am doing. But I don't know of any other way to go if we are all going to chip in on something.

My PayPal info can be found in the Wanna Help dropdown menu found in the title bar located up above. It was set up to donate to the site, but since only one person has ever done that I will know that any donations are for getting Kaitlyn something. I am also pretty sure you can notate this in the Paypal transaction as well.

The only other thing we would need to decide on is exactly what to get. Even with just a few people I am sure we can get something really kickass..even knowing that gift shop stuff is over-priced.

Edit:
The gift shop is online:
http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/root/vu...?site=giftshop (http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/root/vumc.php?site=giftshop)

But not their prices. So whatever we decided on, someone would have to call and get a total. I'm not real good at picking out gifts, so maybe one of you females could do that (that's a compliment)? All I need is a total and what to ask for and then I'll pay for it via CC.

I'm matching Athena's 25 bucks.

I just got of the phone with Becky from that location and she informed me that to contribute to the fund, simply mail a check or whatever to the address (I verified it) and simply put In Care Of Kaitlyn Lasitter Fund or something to that effect. If you need more info, give them a ring..they answer fairly quickly...just press "0".

Thanks. I figure we would get the tile and have that sent to her house since it wont actually get here until after she is released from the hospital. That is unless her stay goes past Friday the 13th. I am having the tile sent to my house, then I will send it along to her house with a few extras. The tile only costs 29.00 with shipping it puts it around 35. Since I have matched Athena's 25 that is still 50 plus whatever you just donated, we still have a little bit left over. I figure maybe we can slip a movie or two in the box. Maybe a CD or something.

But I'll keep everyone informed on that once the tile comes in (I ordered it today).

If ur looking for a well made low priced statue of Hekate. try here http://www.sacredsource.com/products.asp?dept=35

I ordered a Black Madonna from them and it was an excellent reproduction. And if ur going to get her a stone be sure to get a Bloodstone. Personal experience proved that it does help to stop bleeding wounds, cuts, &c.

Also, if you have no objections, I can enroll her in several perpetual mass associations. I can have the Sacred Heart Spiritual Society send her a lovely red display folder w/certificate. Prayer can't hurt.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the news is reporting that Kaitlyn has been released from the hospital. I know that 613 had to go back to work and may not be returning here, but did want to use the news of this to let the family know I wish her a speedy, healthy recovery.

Also, the tile we ordered will be here in two days. At that time, we still have a few bucks extra to throw in some movies. As we saw in this thread, 613 was interested in picking out some stuff to watch with his daughter...maybe we should just use what is left over by sending them an Amazon GC?

Anyway, thanks to those who contributed, I will be contacting you via PM with some other details after I post this.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their genuine concern and generosity. Kate is doing real good, with of course the totally understanable bouts of some depression but a whole bunch of PISSED off. The sad thing is it seems the "state" is being what some people describe as "shady". Don't worry about it. Anal keeps telling us about a pesky leprechaun that stalks him. We keep asking him to prove it by getting a picture or something, but Anal keeps coming up with different excuses (he turns invisible, he cannot be photographed, etc)For awhile there, I thought he was just pulling our legs, you know, just being funny or something. But then whenever new members signed up, he would ask

"Are you who I think you are?"

Obviously, I thought he was implying that a friend or co-worker must have signed on...or maybe someone he knows from another forum. That is until I started getting PM's and emails from these new members. They were upset and wondering why Anal keeps contacting them accusing them of being Salty McPicklecrumbs the Pesky Leprechaun. A lot of new members end up not coming back because of it. I talked to Anal about it, but he swears that he will stop and that he realizes the entire thing is just crazy as hell. But then, just when I think things are normal, he asks again...

"Are you who I think you are?"

If he contacts you, accusing you of being Salty McPicklecrumbs the Pesky Leprechaun, do me a favor and just tell him that he is correct and you mean him no harm. Thanks!

http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20081122/NEWS01/311220008/1008

Nearly 1 ½ years after Kaitlyn Lasitter's feet were severed on a ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, the amusement park has reached a confidential out-of-court settlement with the teenager's family, who had sued the park for negligence.

The lawyer for Kaitlyn's parents, Monique and Randy Lasitter, said they are "relieved" the case is over, but hardly happy.

"The word 'happy' is not used in this family," the lawyer, Larry Franklin, told reporters yesterday. "There is no way you can be OK when your daughter's legs are cut off."

In a statement, Kentucky Kingdom said it deeply regretted "the tragedy that Kaitlyn suffered" and said the settlement will provide "lifetime care" for her.

Franklin disputed that, saying that Kaitlyn's medical condition is unstable and it is impossible to know what the future holds for her.

The amount of the settlement wasn't disclosed, but Franklin noted that Kaitlyn's unpaid medical bills total nearly $500,000 and that Kentucky law allows recovery for future lost income, as well as pain and suffering.

He said the family plans to move from Louisville "to get a fresh start" and allow Kaitlyn to avoid taunts and bad jokes related to the June 21, 2007, accident.

Kaitlyn, then 13, was riding the Superman Tower of Power -- which lifted passengers 177 feet, then dropped them at speeds of more than 50 mph -- when a cable broke and severed her feet.

Her parents, who didn't talk to reporters yesterday, alleged that Kentucky Kingdom was negligent in inspecting, testing, maintaining and operating the ride.

State officials announced last May that it was impossible to pinpoint why a cable became fatigued and snapped on the ride, but they said Kaitlyn's injuries would have been limited to "cuts and scrapes" if the ride operator had immediately hit its emergency stop button.

Officials also said the accident might have been avoided if park workers had followed the ride manual's instructions for detecting deterioration in the cable.

The amusement park, which was fined $1,000, the maximum allowed at the time, denied liability in the Lasitters' lawsuit and blamed the accident in part on the ride's Swiss manufacturer.

After the accident, doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., reattached Kaitlyn's right foot but could not save her left foot, which was later fitted with a prosthesis.

Since then, Kaitlyn has undergone four amputation surgeries, including one last February in which surgeons cut 1 ½ inches of bone from the end of her left leg after it had grown through the muscle tissue and began pushing through the skin.

She underwent surgery again last month to repair a plate connecting her reattached foot to her leg and to add some genetically engineered bone.

Thanks for the update M. There is seriously no amount of money that can compensate this family in my opinion. I'm glad that they will be able to get a fresh start. I can pretty much bet that there was also not enough punitive damages against the park and/or ride's insurance companies that it will even hit them hard enough to make them think twice about boosting their ride inspections. They were probably hyper-vigilante for a few months but it's probably back to business as usual...
