BARTOW - Polk detectives say DNA evidence has led the arrest of a suspect who abandonded a baby in a dumpster more than two years ago.
Back in November of 2007, 41-year-old Kami Sargent was placed on probation for driving with a suspended license.
In December, a DNA swab of hers was collected and entered into CODIS, a national DNA index system.
On Wednesday, Polk detectives got word that Sargent's DNA matched that of an infant found dead in a Kathleen dumpster on May 9, 2006.
They arrested Sargent and brought her in for questioning.
Detectives say Sargent admitted giving birth to the girl.
She said she kept the pregnancy a secret.
When she went into labor, she said she rented a motel room, and gave birth to the baby in a bathtub full of water.
Sagrent told detectives she passed out from the pain, and when she woke, the baby was dead, submerged in the water.
She said she then drove to the apartment complex in Kathleen, where she left the infant in a dumpster.
Sargent faces charges of aggravated manslaughter, and was be booked into the Polk County jail.
