BEAVERTON – A 79-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for raping a 5-year-old girl, Beaverton police said.

Charles Raymond Buchanan

Charles Raymond Buchanan was arraigned Wednesday in Washington County court.

The alleged abuse occurred on April 19th.

The five-year-old girl is related to Buchanan’s girlfriend and reportedly thought of Buchanan as a grandfather figure.

Buchanan was being held on $50,000 bail.

Charles Raymond Buchanan, 79, is being held in Washington County Jail on $50,000 bail following arraignment on first-degree sex abuse charges.

Buchanan's girlfriend's son used to be romantically involved with the 5-year-old's mother, said Beaverton Police Department Detective Sgt. Jim Shumway.

Shumway said police were first notified of possible abuse April 19, and arrested Buchanan on April 20.

He was released for a time while investigators gathered more evidence, and indicted again May 19, Shumway said.
