Two children were injured today after a dust devil lifted a jumping castle into the air, sending it airborne before crashing in a local intersection.

The Tucson Fire Department responded to the intersection of 11th Avenue and Speedway Boulevard at 2 p.m. today, where a jumping castle was on the median.
The jumping castle had flown over three lanes of traffic before crashing. Fire Department spokeswoman Trish Tracy said the jumping castle at one point was flying about 15 feet high in the air.

Two children, a boy and a girl, were in the jumping castle at the time. They both were transported to a local hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.

This is the second jumping castle incident that has occurred in Pima County this year.

During a Marana birthday party in February, 9-year-old Alissa Baray suffered a concussion after the jumping castle she was in was propelled airborne and dropped her on a roof.

Fire department officials say that before signing a release for a jumping castle, parents should look at the equipment to ensure the anchor system is in place and that it is not worn.
Also, officials recommend deflating the jumping castle under windy conditions. A responsible adult should supervise at all times.http://azstarnet.com/news/local/crime/article_4f70cdf6-5d73-11e0-9be7-001cc4c03286.html

Oh, SUPER. We are going to a birthday party this Sunday....featured entertainment....Jumping Castle. I personally have never seen one take off flying, the pros stake that shit all down for ya. And I know as a parent, if I were to inspect the equipment to ensure the anchor system is in place and that it is not worn, I would have no clue wtf I was looking at. Poor kids....they will probably never jump again. :(

I can see the hundreds of legislators, who have not made a name for themselves yet scrambling to introduce a bill, and then the cities and counties rubbing their hands thinking of the revenue from permits and inspections.
Not to mention the lawyer who get this one.

We used to have a Jumpy house business and my hubby was always placing them in areas where he can place stakes down in the dirt. Once placed with the stakes, then he would go in and jump like a mad man. We were always scared of this happening. Never place it on cement, the motion of the bouncing move them too.

I wish I could find the other story on dd, has a picture too. The thing was well secured but the upwinds were powerful strong and took the damn thing with the two kids in it! we get some wicked winds sometimes so that must have been something to see....omg. imagine having to chase that thing down the street after your kid!?

That one looks like a trampoline though right?

I did a search on "Marana", "bounce", "bouncy", and "house", and that was the only story that showed up in all four searches.

I thought I remembered the story had a photo of the bounce house draped over the roof of the house it landed on. It's possible the paper edited the story since it was posted and put a different photo in that position.

Yes the article linked to by Alf is about a trampoline, but they refer to it as a bouncy house due to the netting around the sides to keep kids from flopping on the ground. That netting is about 6' high, and runs around the outside edge of the trampoline.
