When 22-month-old Tyler Jacobson wandered off into the dark woods surrounding his South Carolina home, he was wearing only his T-shirt and a diaper.
Rescuers using a bloodhound tracking team and an infrared-equipped search helicopter scoured the woods for the missing boy, but high winds and deep darkness forced them to call off their search until daylight Saturday.

After wandering away from home, 22-month-old Tyler Jacobson made it through a cold night in the dark South Carolina woods thanks to his family dog, the local sheriff said.Thankfully, the toddler had someone looking after him. One of his family's dogs apparently had tagged along and stayed at his side through the night, keeping the boy warm and safe as temperatures dropped into the 40s.
"I believe that dog being with him is what kept him alive," Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews told AOL News in a telephone interview today.
"I was with one of my officers talking to the helicopter crew when we got the call, 'They found him.' And I was like, 'Is he alive?' We worried there was no way, because of the coldness and because he had been out there all night.
"When they said, 'He's fine,' I'm thinking, Wow. How did that happen? And the answer is because of that dog."
Tyler was reported missing about 8 p.m. Friday by his mother, Jacklyn Marie Jacobson, 25, who said that the child left the bedroom where she and her boyfriend were watching a movie to get some juice, according to local newspaper The State.
Dozens of police officers, firefighters and sheriff's deputies searched the woods, the infrared was looking for a little boy alone -- and without knowing one of the family's two dogs was missing as well, they may have missed the pair, Matthews said.
"We're surmising that's why the helicopter crew could not distinguish the child. They picked up deer and other animals, but they just did not see a small child alone," Matthews told AOL News. Around 3 a.m., with the helicopter needing fuel and winds increasing, they decided the search would resume Saturday morning.
That morning, as dozens of police officers and firefighters headed into the woods a man walking down the road said he thought he heard crying in the woods, Matthews said.
The crying boy and the dog, a mid-size black Labrador retriever mix, were found about a quarter mile from home. The child was cold but otherwise uninjured, Matthews said.
Emily DuBose and Linda Harr, who live in the house near where Tyler was found, said they heard the helicopters overhead Friday night but didn't know a little boy was missing.
When we saw the choppers last night, we just assumed a criminal was loose, so I locked the door. The last thing I was gonna do is go outside," Harr told local television news station WIS-TV. "I just wish I'd have known, I could have warmed him up, called the cops."
They praised the dog, who kept close to Tyler.
"Just thinking that a dog would watch a baby over the night, it's kind of like a movie instead of real life," DuBose told the station.
Matthews said the boy's father is in the Army stationed in Hawaii, and was on his way back home. He described the living conditions inside the family's home as "deplorable," telling AOL News, "That's kind of a nice way of saying how nasty it is."

ELGIN, SC (WIS) - A missing 2-year-old boy in Elgin was found Saturday morning after Kershaw County deputies say the family dog kept him warm and safe all night.
Sheriff Jim Matthews said 22-month-old Tyler Jacobson was reunited with his family after he was found across the street behind a neighbor's home when someone reported hearing crying in the area.
Tyler was reported missing around 8:00pm Friday from a residence on Ashley Creek Drive. Matthews said the boy's mother, 25-year-old Jacklyn Marie Jacobson, and her boyfriend Jose Gloria told investigators Tyler went to get some juice and didn't come back.
Kershaw County deputies used a bloodhound tracking team and a SLED helicopter with infrared capabilities, but called the search off around 12:30am Saturday. The search resumed around 7:45am, and the boy was found shortly thereafter. "Just thinking that a dog would watch a baby over the night, it's kind of like a movie instead of real life," said Emily DuBose, who lives in the house outside which the baby was found.
DuBose had no idea a story of devotion and survival was playing out right outside her door. "When we saw the choppers last night, we just assumed a criminal was loose, so I locked the door," said Linda Harr, who also lives at the house. "The last thing I was gonna do is go outside."
"I heard some barking early in the morning, but I didn't really think about it, I just heard dogs barking," said DuBose.
But during the night, Jacobson's dog was keeping watch over his 22-month-old master in temperatures that got down to the 40s. "I just wish I'd have known, I could have warmed him up, called the cops," said Harr.
Now, words of praise for the dog who likely helped save little Tyler's life. "Since he belonged to them, he must have followed them the whole way, so that's very special," said Harr.
And so this story has a happy ending, thanks to the special bond of a child's best friend.
Sheriff Matthews said the family was interviewed Friday night, and again on Saturday. He said the boy's biological father is in the Army and stationed in Hawaii, and is currently on his way back to Kershaw County.http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=14369871

I read this story yesterday I think... I was super happy to hear he was found. Then the last line in the article I read said the home was found in deplorable condition. I thought right away damn I should have known! My guess the parents are to busy using drugs to watch the baby or clean the house. Thank God the dog loved him enough to keep him safe!
Matthews said the state Department of Social Services had been notified that the living conditions in the boy's home were "deplorable."

Obviously this is a lovely, sweet story, but if I were a Kershaw County deputy, I'd be mighty embarrassed that my bloodhound tracking team and infrared helicopter couldn't find the kid on the other side of the street, but Fido the wonder mutt did.

ELGIN, S.C. – Authorities are crediting the family dog with keeping a missing 2-year-old South Carolina boy safe and warm as he spent a night outside.
Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says Tyler Jacobson was found with the dog behind a house across the street from his home Saturday morning.
His mother reported Tyler missing Friday night after the boy left the room where the family was watching a movie and didn't return. Deputies used bloodhounds and a helicopter to search until after midnight but found nothing.
Matthews says the family's part-Labrador retriever apparently found the boy and kept watch over him as temperatures dipped into the 40s.
The woman who lives in the house where Tyler was found said she heard barking outside but ignored it until she heard crying, too.
Thankfully this story had a happy ending, but this one line made me think of little Joshua Davis.

Ditto D.G!
This story is a good reminder, that you can have the best hi tech equipment that money can buy but it doesn't suddenly make dumbass cops become super sleuths. Not that is should take a super sleuth, to find a kid across the street from his house or anything F.F.S.
It is pretty sad, all this technology and the only reason the kid is here today, is because of a dog.
I also really have to wonder, why is a two year old going and pouring his own drink anyway? and how long was he missing before someone actually realized it? Its not like a kid that age can really move that quickly? I hope to God Daddy takes the poor little guy back with him, I was in shock and disbelief to read that he found Mommy fail, to have a filthy home, she just didn't seem to fit the profile.

All it takes is a little love. Not science, not specially-trained dogs, just love.
I wish all missing kids had had a "best friend."

Stories like these is why I will never accept a rental that my Ozzy can not come along. My dog is part of my family, and I love the hell out of him. I know he loves me too. DG, me too. I rather spend my day with my dog, than people I know....

S.C. Toddler Saved by Family Dog Wanders Off Again, Parents Arrested
(NewsCore) - Just days after a loyal family dog was credited with saving the life of a missing toddler in South Carolina, the 22-month-old boy wandered off from home again prompting authorities to arrest his parents, the Charlotte Observer reported Monday.
The toddler, and a six-month-old baby have been taken into protective custody while their mother Jacklyn Marie Jacobson, 25, and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Jose Bleckler were in custody on charges of unlawful neglect.
Eight days later, on Sunday, he was found by a neighbor about 11:20am who lives about a third of a mile (500m) from the home, crying and alone.

This is from a blog site, so I'll look for a better link.
http://thestir.cafemom.com/toddler/118845/toddler_protected_overnight_by_dog
Last week there was a heartwarming story about little Tyler Jacobson, the 2-year-old South Carolina boy who wandered off from his home, but was protected overnight in the chilly temperatures by his loyal dog. While most of the attention went to what a wonderful creature the dog was, it seems more attention should have been directed toward the boy's home life. Because once again, Jacobson wandered off alone from his house -- just eight days later.
The first incident happened April 1, and it took a 25-person search party, bloodhounds, and helicopters to find him. You would think after all that, the parents might be a little overprotective ... or even just protective. But Sunday, a neighbor found the boy wandering the streets again, screaming, and called police. The dog, incidentally, was by his side.
The neighbor, James Lawson, told WISTV: "I'm thankful to the Lord I found him before he ended up in that creek over there, and then nobody found him."
One time is unfortunate, maybe explainable, perhaps excusable, but when it happens twice in such a short period of time, then something is obviously very wrong with the care he's receiving This time at least action was taken, and the boy's mother, Jacklyn Jacobson, 25, and her boyfriend, Jose Gloria, 21, were jailed Sunday for unlawful neglect of a child.
Thank god for that dog. Stupid asshat parents do not deserve to get those children back ever. I don't know why social services didn't remove the kids the first time.

maybe someone really should have been listening to this child's father the first time around.

I think the remarks about deplorable living conditions were made by Sheriff Matthews. Which has me wondering why these people didn't get arrested and how the hell they still had their children.
