NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- Police said a man shot and killed by a South Florida widow was actually a suspect in her husband's slaying.
The North Miami Crime Scene Unit was back at the scene of the home on Northwest 12th Street on Tuesday. Police said Janepsy Mesa shot and killed Ilam Nissim.
Detectives said on Wednesday that Nissim was possibly a suspect in her husband's death last month. Police said Janepsy Mesa had suspicions that Nissim had been involved in her husband's shooting.
"He was a friend of the family's," North Miami Police Department Lt. Neal Cuevas said. "She did indicate to the detectives on a prior occasion that she suspected that he might have had something to do with the murder of her husband."
Police said it's unclear why Nissim was at the house, but police said he walked in, opened the door and that's when something went wrong.
"There was an exchange of conversation between the two of them," Cuevas said. "For whatever reason, she apparently felt threatened and shot and killed him."
Police said Nissim didn't have a weapon and that he was shot multiple times.
Janepsy Mesa is not being charged because police said she acted in self-defense.
"After detectives interviewed her, no, they felt at the time that this could be a case of self-defense," Cuevas said.
There are several surveillance cameras around the Mesa home, but police said, at the time of the shooting, not all were working.
Police said, as the investigation continues, Mesa could face charges.

Widow kills man inside her home
A woman widowed when gunmen killed her husband last month in North Miami shot and killed a man who was inside the bedroom of her home on Tuesday.

Less than a month ago, Janepsy Cindy Mesa clutched her bandaged toddler and cried hysterically in front of reporters -- begging for help in finding her husband's assassins.
On Tuesday, she became a killer -- in self-defense.
...
On April 23, Mesa cried dramatically at a news conference at North Miami police headquarters. She begged for tips to solve the murder of her husband Orlando Mesa, 37.
She held her 20-month-old son, Noah, his arm still bandaged from a bullet wound.
''They had no mercy for my son. They had no mercy for Orlando,'' she cried at the time.
``This is a nightmare and I'd like to wake up.''
Three days earlier, just before 8 p.m., two gunmen emerged from a late-model white Toyota Corolla, with black bumpers and tinted windows, and then unleashed a hail of gunfire at Orlando Mesa and his son outside their home.
Hopping back in the car, the shooters drove off but returned, got out and finished off Mesa as he shielded his son.
The methodical manner in which Mesa was killed -- and the number of bullet casings left behind on the street -- suggest he was targeted, police say.
Noah was shot in the arm and grazed in the leg. The child was with family in Kendall at the time of Tuesday's shooting, police said.
On March 3, detectives had seized two large bags of marijuana from Orlando Mesa, and $16,000 in suspected drug cash from a green shoe box in his wife's purse.
The city later returned most of the money when she proved it had come from lottery winnings.
Janepsy Mesa declined to address drug connections during the April 23 news conference.
Surveillance cameras that had last month captured an image of a white car believed used in her husband's death were not working Tuesday.
