A Waupaca woman and her boyfriend could face 14 years in prison if found guilty of abusing the woman's young daughters.

Tonya Schiesser, 28, and Joseph Durrant, 31, made their first appearance in Waupaca County court on Wednesday. They face four counts of child abuse.

All of this was brought to light when the girls' father brought them to the hospital with bruises on their bodies.

According to the criminal complaint, the abuse was going on for nearly a year.

The complaint says Schiesser's daughters, who are now six and nine years old, told investigators they "had been taped together for misbehaving... and that there was also tape over their mouths so they could not talk."

The girls also said at times they had to hold weights over their heads for misbehaving, and if they said something wrong they would have to hold vinegar in their mouth.

In police interviews, both Schiesser and Durrant admitted to parts of the alleged abuse. In the complaint, Durrant said he would spank the girls and it was his idea to tie them up "because the girls had been fighting and he thought this would teach them to get along with each other."

Schiesser said "she knew the girls' mouths were being duct taped" but "did nothing to stop it because she was afraid she would lose her kids."

Schiesser said it was her idea to put vinegar in her daughters' mouths.

Schiesser did say "she feels the children have been abused, because holding up the weights was probably excessive."
