Police said they found the man in deplorable conditions
BELLAIRE, Ohio -- Police said a Bellaire man had to be removed from his home on Washington Street Sunday.
Police said the man's skin had become attached to the fabric of the chair after he sat in it for two years
Authorities said he was sitting in his own feces and urine and maggots were visible.
Police were called in to help transfer the man to the hospital.
Authorities said they had to cut a hole in the wall to get the man out of his home.
Shockingly, two other able-bodied people lived there---another man, who had a separate bedroom, and the girlfriend of the man who was stuck in the chair. Officials say the girlfriend served food to him, since he never got up.
Bellaire Code Enforcer Jim Chase says now the tennants have been given orders to clean it or leave it.
One officer said it was the worst thing he ever responded to. And most said the worst part of all was the smell. Ironically the landlord says the man in the chair rented from her before and used to be a vital active person.

And even so, his girlfriend lived with him AND served him food. I wonder if this is one of those CDD relationships Nell was talking about.

Community Asks Question in Obese Bellair man case (http://wtrf.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=96814)
"This is a living condition issue, that is unfortunately a matter of personal choice. It didn't affect a child, it didn't affect a senior citizen. It's a gray area. The kind of case that falls between the cracks."
You might be on to something.

Damn. I dated a guy from Bellaire for over a year.
WTRF 7 News is told by several sources that the man insisted on living his life in his chair, insisted that his girlfriend bring him food and soft drinks.
Um, what happened to just say no? Tell his fat ass to get the fuck up and get it himself!

Oh, FFS, you guys, there was no sex. That GF probably was very happy to have no demands made on her for sex. Obviously, it wasn't a CDD relationship either because that would have been a sin.
If she had been a normal woman, who a "normal" relationship with a man, she'd have broken up with him when he started to smell and rely on her not just to bring him food and drinks, but for income. I'd say it all points to a woman that had some issues of her own and this situation in some way allowed her to be comfortable. No sex, no physical abuse, possibly no verbal abuse (since he shouldn't have felt too comfortable about the possibility she might leave or beat him) . . . Yet she could believe she was involved (e.g., not a spinster), and that she was caring for someone (e.g., needed, selfless).

Ahh, I make light only to amuse myself.
She probably felt trapped, used and completely alone....except for that room mate. I'm curious about that one.
Anyone who has had a loved one get ill on them would understand how overwhelming and maddening it can be.

She says she checked on them periodically but lately he always sat with a blanket over him. She says she had no idea it had come to this.
Sunday morning his housemates called officials when he was unresponsive.

The 43-year-old Bellaire man has died according to our radio news partner WKKX.
Who is in charge of a case like this? First of all, is it a legal issue? A Belmont County legal authority says it appears that it is not.
The man, from all official accounts, was not being held against his will, was not a captive, not forced to live confined to his chair, with no access to hygiene.
WTRF 7 News is told by several sources that the man insisted on living his life in his chair, insisted that his girlfriend bring him food and soft drinks.
Several people have suggested it's a case for Adult Protective Services. However, their jurisdiction is reportedly limited to the elderly. Clients must be in their 60s or older. A 43 year old does not qualify.
Is it a case for Children's Services? So often, cases involving filthy houses fall under their jurisdiction. But in this case, officials say, no children were involved.
And there's the Health Department---They do have an environmental health section, but it deals more with things like lead paint on walls that could affect children.
No one wants to address this issue on camera. But off-camera, this is what they are saying.
"This is a living condition issue, that is unfortunately a matter of personal choice. It didn't affect a child, it didn't affect a senior citizen. It's a gray area. The kind of case that falls between the cracks."
And finally there's the landlord---She says she's been attacked online and on the airwaves and she's tired of it.
She says, "you rent to adult and you expect them to know how to live. He was always sitting underneath a blanket. I had no idea the extent of it."
She says there are now seven people cleaning the house

hole in wall (lots of filth/garbage spilling out)
Too bad the guy passed away. But seriously, even if he wanted to sit in that chair for the rest of his life, and eat and drink and sleep there....who the heck does not get up even to go to the bathroom or shower. That is just gross.
And the girlfriend and guy roommate. What is wrong with them that they would live like that and put up with the smell and filth. They are supposedly able-bodied people...why couldn't they clean up the place or haul the guy's ass out of his chair and throw him in the shower too if need be.

Diogenes syndrome, also known as senile squalor syndrome is what its called...
They have a disorder now for every type of behavior, so if its a disorder does this mean the guy couldnt help himself, that he was destined to die in a mountain of shit and maggots and stuck in a chair...

I don't think they felt it was their obligation to clean up after another adult. One who was, reportedly, able bodied two years ago. If I had a roommate get all "I'm going to lay here in my chair forever, serve me" I wouldn't be likely to do so. But then, I'd probably leave before long just from disgust. If I were thinking more clinically about it, I'd probably call social services, or his family, or something, but I don't know if I'd be that clearheaded as a girlfriend or roommate. I'mean, he had to be depressed . . .
Of course, no social services or health services agency was going to intervene if they weren't called and I'm betting no one did. I'm just surprised the landlord, who had apparently been in the house, didn't at least insist they get rid of the unspecified stench. It's her house, they're her renters, she had the right to insist they clean up or get out whenever she began to notice it.

If she was seeing him in the chair with a blanket, she had to freaking smell the shit... so Im not exactly buying her story...

This just makes me SO sick. I think maybe the girlfriend & room-mate didn't know what to do. I'm sure the guy (in the chair) didn't want them to call anyone...I know my mom was in a panic not wanting me to call an ambulance when she was sick. Still, they should've done something instead of letting him rot in his own filth. And how the hell anyone lived in the same house as that, I'll just never know. The stench...omg there must've been a horrible horrible stench! Gah!

Okay, no one wants to be interviewed on camera. But what do we really know about the able-bodied people that were living there? Maybe THEY were actually a couple. She might have pretended to be a girlfriend to the guy in the chair. He wouldn't know any better - he's been in a chair for 2 years. How do we know they weren't on drugs and just staying there for free and shoving food at him when he asked to keep him happy? I guess I'm just not in a trusting mood right now. I want details. Well, not really. Whatever.
