A West Dundee woman faces probation or prison after she acknowledged stabbing two of her estranged husband's pet lizards and hurling them against a wall, killing one of the reptiles, authorities said today.

Sara Tinsley, 38, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals in the April 2, 2007, attack on a pair of bearded dragons, named Fred and Ethel. The allegations drew the ire of local and national animal rights groups.

Tinsley, of 541 S. Second St., is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 21 before Kane County Judge Grant Wegner. There was no plea deal and she faces probation or up to three years in prison, prosecutor Nemura Pencyla said.

Attorney Timothy Mahoney intends to keep Tinsley, who has custody of two children, out of prison. He said she was the victim of an abusive marriage, including a violent row that sparked the attack on the lizards.

"It's abhorrent," Mahoney said. "Everything in this woman's background would show that she should get probation."

Earlier this year, animal rights activists scrutinized the case after Mahoney said he would challenge the state's "companion animal" law and argue Tinsley's offenses should be reduced, in part, because bearded dragons were not on par with other pets, such as dogs and cats.

Illinois law allows for felony charges to be filed when animals considered by their owners as pets or commonly thought of as pets are abused.

Similar to iguanas, there are roughly 50 types of bearded dragons, the most popular among them grow to about two feet long.

Tinsley was arrested after she threw Fred and Ethel against a well and knifed the lizards several times during an argument while she was on the phone with her then-husband, Harry E. Tinsley. Ethel died and Fred recovered after surgery, Pencyla said.

Harry Tinsley, 38, of 1209 Bishop St., West Chicago, was later charged with domestic battery, accused of choking Sara Tinsley a day before she exacted revenge on him through Fred and Ethel.

Man I love lizards, let's stab the bitch and throw her against a wall!

We have lost 2 lizards in the last year, they're cute, they each have their own personalities.

Bearded dragons are adorable, probably alot cuter than the perp

Prosecutors had requested probation, fines and counseling, asked the judge to consider setting some restrictions for Tinsley having contact with animals or sentencing her to community service at an animal-rescue organization.

The judge instead ordered Tinsley to spend 50 hours collecting dead animals from township highways, saying working in a rescue shelter might be perceived as putting an offender "in a candy store" by some.

She also was told to pay $604 in veterinary bills, $375 in fees and court costs. She must undergo an anger-management evaluation and was placed on probation for 18 months.

Tinsley, 38, pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty in May.

Her former husband, Harry Tinsley, 38, attended the sentencing. He wore a T-shirt emblazoned with a picture of a bearded dragon lizard and a caption that read, "Here's lickin' at you, kid."

Harry Tinsley pleaded guilty to domestic battery in March.

The couple have divorced since then, and both have remarried.

Tinsley currently has sole custody of two children, ages 17 and 11, and recently received counseling related to her divorce and other problems. She also cares for two dogs, two cats, four rabbits and four fish.

"Not on par" with other pets? Who is he to decide which pets are worthwhile and which aren't? Just because it's not a dog or a cat doesn't mean you don't love the pet as much. Maybe more, since lots of people get dogs for protection vs. companionship, or because having a dog or cat is the "thing to do." People who have other types of pets often have them because of a genuine interest in, and love for, lizards (or whatever).

I feel for this woman if she's been abused...but you don't counter abuse by taking your anger out on another helpless being. I could get completely behind her if she'd waited until hubby was passed out and then gotten him in the head with a frying pan...but stabbing and torturing two tiny creatures? That's just sick, and loses her any sympathy I might have had.

And, umm...this all happened in April of 2007 (so, about a year and a half ago), and they've already gotten divorced and both have already remarried? WTF? Talk about rushing into things! When did they even have time to emotionally heal from the divorce, work out their own issues, and then meet and fall in love again? If I ever got divorced, I think I'd take a quite a while to examine what led me to be in such an unhealthy lizard-stabbing relationship to start with, before I rushed right back into a marriage with someone else.

I don't think people that get so mad they stab lizards and people married to lizard-stabbers even think of things like that. The only issues they think they have are their spouse, which is fixed by divorce.

I'm laying money the reason for the divorce are the new spouses.
