Jeff Bryant got called into work early today, which saved one child's life.
The 24-year-old man, who lives in the Fox Pointe apartments in Milwaukie, headed toward the parking lot holding a cup of coffee and his car keys when he heard the faint sound of an alarm ringing.
As he walked by an alley he saw black smoke pouring out of the second story and saw a woman holding a small child by the arm out the window.
"Drop your baby!" Bryant called.
"Will you catch him?" she asked.
"Yes!"
She let the toddler fall and Bryant caught him.
The sleeping child didn't wake up.
The woman leaped right afterwards, landing on the concrete driveway.
By that time, others had come pouring out of the large apartment complex on Southeast Roethe Road in Milwaukie, including Bryant's friend, Micah Taulbe, 25, who brought a blanket. He wrapped the small child up while they waited for firefighters and paramedics to arrive.
Bryant was so shaken after catching the child, he walked to a nearby convenience store and bought a beer and some cigarettes.
He said he called his boss at the car audio store and told him he wouldn't be in and explained why. Later, he took a snapshot of the smoke pouring from the apartment complex.
Before he left, Bryant said that picturing himself seeing one of his own children dropped from a height helped him catch the neighbor's child.
"I caught him right under his armpits, just like catching an egg," he said.
