Hockey? I can honestly say I've never watched it before. I dunno... maybe I'd like it.

And if you want to stalk me, I'll warn you that your going to be in for a boring ride. Its more or less just back and forth from work!

Next time I go to Mason City for a game, I will sneak you in.
NAHL Junior Nationals are there next spring and I will go if Albert Lea makes it in.

I thought Lesnar looked pretty good in that fight. If he hadn't postured up on his foot, that fight was going to be over in 30 seconds or so.

Mir was a badass to get that heel-hook and hit it as hard as he did. Wonderful fight. Not sure if it was enough to give Mir a title shot, but the UFC HW division is paper-thin right now.

Whooohoooo some MMA fans here huh? I have been to a few of the UFC fights in the past year, my friend fights in the UFC and I'm also best friends with his aunt so we go together to the fights.

Which fighter?

And the next few months are going to be crazy. With DREAM taking off, EliteXC coming to Primetime TV with CBS, the IFL going with a new ring and fighting format, and so many other organizations getting bigger... it is awesome. I love Inside MMA with Bas on HDNET, which has become THE channel for MMA goodness every week.

I'm actually just starting to get into the whole UFC craze, I know... about four years later than everyone else. I've always loved boxing, other than football its my favorite sport to watch... but damn, there is nobody thats hardly worth watching in that sport right now.

UFC looks like a fun alternative that I can get into, plus we have a whole shit load of UFC DVD's at work that I can watch for free. And free shit rules.

I was born in Mason City... Webster city is about an hour south on I35!
My grandma lives in Albert Lea and my other grandma lives in Austin, MN!

I didn't know you were so close!

I'm not - about 5 hrs away but went to Mason City 4 times last year. I'm a die hard hockey fan in that league. We recently lost our team but my good friend was hired as the GM for the new team in Albert Lea. So a party trip is still possible.

MMA - It sucks here in ND as the only way I can see it is Spike stuff. Hubby would bust a gasket if I did PPV. Did find that we can get the HDNet on Directv though so will have to slide that in...
I AM learning a lot from reading the MMA thread here!!!

The swivel understands what they are going through. Ever since the swivel did that first podcast, and swivel became an Internet sensation, everyone that has ever known the swivel is clamoring for a piece of the "swivel". It hurts to say "No" to all the people that used to say "no" to the swivel, but there is only so much swivel to go around... and Hippiepoet takes up most of the crumbs from my wife's frequent feastings of the swivel...

I wish Lesnar would train more before doing this. He almost killed Mir, he just doesn't have any defense.

He could be one of the great ones, if he just gets defense, he could be elite.

I understood the ire that MMA fans had towards Lesnar when he first announced his move to MMA. What I do NOT understand is their ire now.

When Lesnar made the announcement, he had never fought anyone professionally for real. And numerous others have made the claim that they were going to fight, and never put up. Lesnar was seen as another one of these clowns.

However, the MOMENT he stepped into the ring to fight another human being in a fair contest of might, all of that derision should have vanished immediately. You can NOT be an MMA fan if you do not respect every man, woman, and child that puts their safety at risk in a fair fight. It takes a ton of balls to get into a ring with 6 oz gloves. One swing from your opponent and you are scarred for life. One submission tweaked too hard, and your joint will never be the same again. You are in peril, and you choose to be.

Any cocksucker that doesn't now see Lesnar as a true warrior, for even having done it once, much less for the ignominy of having lost to a former UFC heavyweight champ, is not an MMA fan. Same goes for Kimbo Slice. As soon as these guys fight in MMA, they become MMA fighters, plain and simple. The "old guard" does not have exclusive rights to the mantle.

Swivel, for me, it's not at all about derision. I recognize Lesnar as a gifted athlete. It's not that I don't think he could ever be ready, and I look forward to the day the he is. My concern is for the fact that he was not ready. I look at that fight and I recognize that he needs a little more than defense. And, I worry about the fact that the UFC is very much a business enterprise, willing to stick unprepared celebrities into fights before they should simply because it will bump up ratings. I've been pretty fucking impressed with UFC cards as of late. I don't want to see them diluted.

And, for the record, I really hope the mini-lecture about what it takes to step into a ring was not directed toward me, of all people.

KillBill20

I don't really think you could call Brock Lesnar an "unprepared celebrity" he has quite an amature wrestling background:

Placed 2nd in 1999 in the NCAA Heavyweight Wrestling
Won the 2000 NCAA Wrestling Championship
Two-time NJCAA All-American
Two-time NCAA All-American
Two-time Big Ten Champion
And went 106-5 overall in four years of college.

He is big enough and strong enough and probably has the talent to do halfway decent in MMA. The unprepared celebrity would be Kurt Angle, who seems to think that with six months of training he could beat Chuck Chuck Liddell.

I don't have to know anything about MMA to know that Liddell would destroy Angle. For one thing, Kurt hasn't wrestled an ACTUAL wrestling match since he won in the olympics... in 1996, twelve years ago. During that time he's undergone neck fusion surgery. There is no possible way that he could trail to become a real MMA fighter... maybe 10 years ago, but not now.

I'm aware of his experience...But since when has wrestling alone made anyone an MMA superstar? I don't think I have to remind you of what the first "M" stands for. ;)

Seriously, the guy had, what, 1 year of training before his fight with Mir? And Mir hasn't really been the same guy since the accident, if you ask me. Losses against Cruz and Vera, right?

Again, it's not that I don't think Lesnar has the required talent, and I'd like to see him develop it. I just think they put him in too early.

That being said, I also hope that Mir's win in that fight is a step toward operating at full capacity again. He's always been a favorite of mine.

He's a fine commentator, but better? The guy broke Sylvia's arm. For that, he'll be in my top 5 for as long as he's in the game. And, I like Joe Rogan. Ideally, I suppose, Mir would replace Goldberg, though. That guy's a douche.

Hubris, not humor. I can't stand that fuckin' guy. He doesn't fight to win, he fights to not lose. I almost dislike him enough to have wished the ref let him continue so Mir could break his other arm. But I'm never quite that spiteful.

I love Sylvia when he isn't champ, and hate him when he is the champ. When he doesn't have the belt, he goes on the attack like a retard being sexually molested.

As soon as he has the belt, he wants to back away from his opponents. Like he knows he has something they want, and he doesn't want to get in their way.

That's why his fight with Ricco was awesome, and his second fight with AA, and his fight with Big Nog. He wanted that belt. His fight with Vera sucked because there was no championship on the line.

Right now, the fight with Fedor is for no title. At the big televised press conference, Sylvia said he hoped they could make the fight for a title (like world MMA HW champ, or some shit). That comment really solidified what I'm talking about. My guess is that Fedor wins if there is no title on the line, but Timmy wins if they promise him a belt.

He's retarded like that. And I love him for it.

I agree, when there is a belt on the line that he wants to win then he will show up and give a decent fight, but if he has the belt then forget it he is a snoozer to watch and I HATE to pay top money for tickets or PPV just to watch slow ass fights.

EEEWWWW, lol

I have seen some of his nasty sweaty, grungy stuff...like his shorts from after fights that had blood and sweat on them and were just GROSS.

ETA: that last pic was from after his fight in Columbus in his room, you can see where his hand is taped up, he broke his thumb in the fight and had to go to the hospital right after it.
