A Wildwood man told police the reason he beat an 18-month-old girl so hard that her heart was bruised was because he had been thinking about his life and it hurt him.

Michael Devante Williams, 18, also told Gainesville Police Department investigators that he attacked his girlfriend's daughter in the middle of the night earlier this month because he "wanted someone else to hurt as much as I hurt."

The little girl's mother took her to the doctor Tuesday because the child had large bruises on her face and chest, as well as bruises on her legs and feet. Doctors at Shands at the University of Florida later found the bruise on her heart as well as a bruise on one lung, a broken rib, that the inside of her lips were split and bloody and that her liver had been lacerated.

Williams said the toddler's mother picked him up on Jan. 18 and drove him to Gainesville for a visit. About an hour after Williams had gone to bed with the child's mother, he got up and went into the room where the little girl and her older sibling were sleeping.

Williams picked her up around the chest and stood her up, then hit her on the buttocks, leg and foot with a wooden incense tray he had picked up in the living room. Then he pushed her and she hit the wall face first. According to Williams, the child's head snapped back when she hit the wall, so he pushed her again and she hit the wall chest first.

The little girl did not cry but her face "balled up like she was going to" cry, and then she lay back down on her bed, Williams told Fair.

Williams said he put the incense tray back in the living room and returned to the room where he had been sleeping with his girlfriend. He said he sat on the edge of his girlfriend's bed and played Mario Brothers on her phone for several minutes, and then laid back down.

In the arrest report, Fair noted that Williams is about 6-foot-2 and weighs approximately 185 pounds while the victim is 32 inches tall and weighs less than 23 pounds.

A 19-year-old Wildwood man pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse Monday for the January beating of an 18-month-old Gainesville girl.

The man, Michael Devante Williams, was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 15 years of probation, said Assistant District Attorney Sean Brewer.

Brewer said that if Williams had gone to trial and been convicted, he could have been sentenced to anywhere between 74 months and 30 years in prison.
