Amazon.com George Romero has always come up with new ways of treating his zombies, and Diary of the Dead is no exception: Romero keeps his dead fresh, with an original approach to the undying subject. This one purports to be the video record of a group of young people who are shooting a low-budget horror movie when the terror strikes: corpses begin re-animating, intent on chewing the living. Our heroes trek across Pennsylvania, encountering the staggering zombies as they go. Other pieces of video are incorporated, which gives Romero a chance at some great set-pieces, including the brilliant opening sequence, a live local-TV feed that goes horribly, horribly wrong, and a home-video tape from a family birthday party, where the party clown turns out to be a dead ringer. All of Romero's Dead films are political, and this one's no exception, with a stark view of the way things are today; it doesn't offer the Hawksian heroics of the survivors in Dawn of the Dead or Land of the Dead for comfort, just a group of bickering, shocked youths. There's too much talk about the detachment of watching things through a lens, but in general this is a bracing, intelligent movie. Plus, there's some excellent splatter. --Robert Horton

Product Description
From legendary frightmaster George A. Romero comes one of the most daring, hypnotic and absolutely vital horror films of the past decade (fangoria.com). Romero continues his influential Dead series, this time focusing on a terrified group of college film students who record the pandemic rise of flesh-eating zombies while struggling for their own survival. Intensely gruesome and relentlessly grisly fueled by the directors signature realistic special effects Diary of the Dead is must-see horror that is Romero at his finest (bloody-disgusting.com).

Sadly the flick is underwhelming. I happened to catch it about two months ago or so and posted a review on here of the film. It's worth a rental at most unless you are like me and are a Romero completest.

I watched it tonight with my son and he was pretty bored with it but said he liked it!
It was worth seeing once but nothing special! Some good gore but some bad too!

From an entertainment perspective, this film is fine. It's well-paced and the production quality is good.

But, for those of us with brains, Romero has fallen off...hard. The good news? I liked it more than the blatant and unoriginal propaganda piece that was Land of the Dead. But not by a whole hell of a lot.

From a social commentary perspective, I found the movie near slanderous in terms of Romero's opinion of my generation. He's like any other old person bitching about the "damn kids these days"...only in movie format. Of course, this isn't the first time I've been insulted by Romero's opinion of his audience. For fuck's sake - had Land of the Dead been any more obvious regarding its political commentary, it would have been titled Land of the Sheeple or Land of the Stupid Americans. C'mon, Romero! Do you think so little of the intelligence of your audience that you can't bring yourself to be subtle?

Well, fooled me once, Romero, shame on you. But, you've done it twice, now. You better believe I won't allow it to happen a third time.

Oh...who am I kidding. I'll probably watch his last flick just so I can complain about his "political commentary for dummies" routine.

Your right about this being a step up from Land of the Dead!

I actually preferred Land Of The Dead to this film. I felt that Land was a fun little zombie romp despite it's heavy handed message. I was absolutely disgusted with Romero's message about race in this film. As soon as black people have the chance to take over, they will? Seriously? WTF is up with that?

I enjoyed the movie when i saw it with my friends. It may not be as good as his original work but hell this is his best most recent work.

As for the blacks taking over, has anybody been to Philadelphia recently? The movie is not a stretch, they do almost run the city and i don't think that was the point.

I do like however the stereotypes he picked to portray and the small bit of comedy placed through out the film. Was i the only person to ask why the christian girl was the only person carrying heat? That one blew my mind and i'm still trying to figure it out...

I also liked how for the first time the main surprise wasn't at how or who died, but what happens to those that survived. The message in the Professor soliloquy at the end was, i do believe, the best way to end a realistic film portrayal of a zombie attack/outbreak.

I have very low standards entertainmentwise. When I go to the movies, I'm not there to be educated or intellectually stimulated in any way. I want blood, guts, zombies, hot chicks, and lots of stuff blowing up. I really, really liked this movie. It had some of the best zombie kills I've seen since 28 Weeks Later.

Have you seen feast? Dawn of the Dead (78 and 04)?

Dawn of the Dead "04 was one of my favorites. I was like 8 months pregnant when I saw it, so the whole zombie baby was disturbing. I didn't like Diary of the Dead. But whatta I know?

Yes and yes! I loved them. Feast was so bad my friends and I were literally howling with laughter. Awesome.

Dawn of the Dead "04 was one of my favorites. I was like 8 months pregnant when I saw it, so the whole zombie baby was disturbing.

Yeah, anything to do with pregnancy and babies has a lot of gross out potential. I thought the zombie baby was just tasteless. But yeah, Dawn of the Dead was all kinds of awesome.

This film made me want to kick babies...a lot. I've never been so infuriated, feeling like I was being talked down to the whole time. Hang it up George. Thanks for the first three.

Definitely a disappointment. Blair Witch editing with zombies meets poor story line. As already said, Romero should hang his zombie skates. Hopefully World War Z will live up to its promise.

Oh, man! Terrible, terrible, terrible. Even if it wasn't soaked in social commentary it STILL would have been a bad movie. Remember kids: Retire at your peak, so everyone will remember you for the GOOD things you've done.
