MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A 25-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.
Police said Scott Philbrick was watching the girl for about a half hour earlier this month, but when the girl's mother returned home, the girl was bleeding, and the mother called 911.
"It was on the afternoon of May 4 that Manchester police responded to a Beech Street address for the report of an injured child," Sgt. Maureen Tessier said. "Upon arrival there, they discovered that Rockingham Ambulance was treating a 6-year-old girl who had sustained some injuries, reportedly as the result of an accidental fall."
Police said that when Philbrick was questioned, he said he was playing with the girl when she fell backwards onto the edge of a dollhouse. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she required surgery for her injuries.
Investigators said they began to question Philbrick's version of what happened.
"Early on in the investigation, some inconsistencies developed," Tessier said. "Our juvenile officers were able to collect some evidence and investigate further, and their information led them to believe that the injuries were the result of a sexual assault as opposed to a fall."
In court, prosecutors said Philbrick's version of what happened has changed twice. He has been charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault.
He was arrested at a rooming house where he had lived for two months, and the building manager described him as a constant problem.
"He kept to himself pretty much," property manager Robin Sanborn said. "It was just one problem after another. A story for why he can't pay rent or why he couldn't do this. It was always a story."
Philbrick was ordered held on $100,000 bail and was scheduled to return to court in about two weeks.
