(05-12) 04:00 PDT South San Francisco -- A 13-year-old boy ran over his 80-year-old grandmother today while backing her car out of the driveway to wash it for her, police said.
The teenager was backing the car out of the driveway at 707 Fourth Lane in South San Francisco with the driver's side door opened just before noon. The grandmother was standing just outside the door and the vehicle abruptly accelerated out of control toward the street. The door hit the grandmother and knocked her down. She was then run over by the left front wheel, according to police.
The boy fell out of the car, hitting his head on the ground, police said.
The vehicle, which was not described by police, crashed into the metal stair railing in front of the house before coming to a stop in the front yard.
The grandmother, Raquel Rodriguez, sustained major injuries: a fractured pelvis, femur and hip. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she was listed in critical but stable condition, police said.
The teen sustained minor injuries, including an abrasion and contusion to his head, legs, ankle and arm. He was also taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.
