View Full Version : Settings to make read threads disappear

I go to first unread post, works o.k., but after I read and go back to search results, the thread is still there in the same place before I read it. I haven't changed any settings so why aren't my threads disappearing from the search results after I read them?

If I hit the back arrow the threads don't update but if I hit new posts button they disappear. Did that make sense? I had to retrain myself to hit new posts instead of the back arrow. Tho I will say on some other forums I visit hitting the back arrow updates the forum to show that I have read certain posts.

Same thing was happening to me last night. Also when there was a new post, I would click on the thread...but the new post would not be there. Only the last post I read. I would have to refresh each time I went into a thread. Weird.

Its not doing it today though.

That's how it's supposed to work. It's the whole point of the back arrow. It takes you back to the previous page. It isn't supposed to reload the page. If other forums are doing it, they're just wasting bandwidth.

Still not working for me.

This is what I've always done:
For a new thread I never read, I click the title, read it then click ____ unread posts
If it's one I read all the time say, Caylee or Chit Chat I click go to first unread and it brings me to the first unread. I look, may or may not comment, then click ____ unread posts

When I am in a thread, like now for example it says 26 unread posts when I click on unread posts (which brings me back to results) it will say 45 unread posts and everywhere I have already been is still there in the same order as it was. I can mark the forum "read" and come back later and everything is new, but after looking for example, the bullshit thread, it still comes up like I haven't seen it yet.

Another example, I just commented on this thread. It's still showing the person before me was the last person to comment. I know my comments are showing up because I got a message earlier form someone who liked my post somewhere, but it still shows up as the person before me posted, as if I haven't read it yet.

I see my last comment here when I scroll down while making this comment, but it will not show up when I click unread posts, it will show cubby being the last to comment

All of DD is being kinda slow and weird today. I just roll with it.

K so I go to the bottom to forum jump to site suggestions and trouble shooting it will pop up with new post, but not in my unread thread results. Everything is still there like when I first went in. I suppose I can mark the forums "read" and just come back later on and it will all be new.

Thanks Nell for posting for me.

Obviously Morbid is not around to work on stuff. Like Nell said, just roll with it. He'll look into it when he gets on.

I've had troubles too with the caching and read/unread feature today. Dunno what it is. Hope Morbid does :)

I kinda thought it was my puter whenever I would come to the DD in the last few days it would take forever to move between pages and stuff, but since everyone else is having problems makes me kinda feel better about my old puter.

Quitcherbitchen folks. Nothing to be done until Morbid gets around.

My suspicion is that whatever is causing the site to be very slow is making cookies and databases not update correctly. It'll all get worked out. Have faith in the great Morbid and let him have a day off.

If you want the page to reload and take out the threads you've read, click the number at the top that says X number of unread posts since your last visit.

Welcome, BreakTheSilence.

I click the unread posts and it takes out the ones I've read.

That is also how it's supposed to work. That's what the option has always been. Due to the slow system (or whatever it is) it is not working for everyone. I click it and it says I have no unread posts - but clicking "new posts" shows many unread. It's the same command so I dunno how that works.

Weird things are going to happen and be different on each system. What works for one may not work for another. Post what works for you so others can try it - but if it doesn't work, wait or try something else.

Not really bitching about it. Just sharing and wondering if anyone else was having the same problem.

I'm not bitchin', just never considered it might be the website, thought it was my computer, cause I deal with stuff with this thing all the time. Made me feel better and besides it's not making it impossible to read just slow and, where I am, slow is much better than not moving at all! LOL Hey! I'm cool!

Now my post is gone... anyway. Not bitching about it. My world isn't ending over it, I'm just sharing in the troubleshooting thread where this stuff is supposed to be posted (I thing) and I'm posting and checking, to troubleshoot my way around. If anyone is having the same problem, I'll let you know if I discover something handy that works in the meantime.

So I can mark the forum "read", go into the arcade, come back and only new posts will show up.

Have you already cleared your cache, logged off D'D, and logged back on? If you have, and the problem is still present, have you tried logging off the computer completely after clearing your cache then coming back? And if you have tried both of those, have you tried rebooting your computer yet?

I have seen Windows computers, from 95 to XP, have some odd problems sometimes. Once I saw one that had been logged in for years that wouldn't play a music CD at all -- until it was rebooted; after that it worked the way it was supposed to. I'm not saying that is the fix; it's more a data point.
