Betty Jo Fowler / Lonnie Fowler / Kevin Curtis
A 31-year-old woman who police say ran over her sister-in-law during a drunken family brawl outside of a Palm Bay American Legion post has been charged with second-degree murder.
The new charge means Betty Jo Fowler could face up to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder in the July 26 death of 39-year-old Teresa Fowler Straight.
She was initially charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, charges that carry a maximum sentence of 15 years. Jurors will likely be presented with the other charges, but will only be able to convict her of one of the homicide-related charges, officials say.
Her husband, Lonnie Fowler, and Straight’s boyfriend, Kevin Curtis, were also charged with accessory after the fact to second-degree murder, obstruction, tampering with evidence and giving a false statement in the case, officials said.

Straight and Betty Jo Fowler were behind the Post 117 building on Veterans Drive when they got into a verbal argument about what the police said was Fowler’s “flirtation” with a club DJ. Lonnie Fowler and Kevin Curtis, who was Straight’s boyfriend, tried to break up the fight.
As Betty Jo Fowler attempted to leave in her Dodge Caravan, the police said she backed into the three other people, knocking them to the ground. As the minivan then moved forward, it ran over Straight. The other two were not badly hurt.
Instead of calling 9-1-1, the Fowlers and Kevin Curtis loaded the critically injured Straight into the van, drove home — where the Fowlers’ four children were left alone — and then went to Palm Bay Community Hospital.
The police were contacted when doctors realized there was more to the incident than they were being told. Straight later died.
“They attempted to make up a story that a random vehicle ran over her in a different location,” said Yvonne Martinez, Palm Bay police spokeswoman. “But they hadn’t been at that location.”
The police said Curtis also was involved in devising that version of events, but video surveillance outside the American Legion hall showed them loading Straight into the minivan.http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20100727/BREAKINGNEWS/100727024/Brother-faces-charges-in-Palm-Bay-death-investigation
