I have more personal ties to this story, but thought I would try posting for the first time. I'm always a lurker. So be kind to me because it's my first time posting!
Our tight knit community is in shock over such a brutal act. Apparently Pedro Jones, who was babysitting, wanted his girlfriend's 17 month old toddler to stop acting like a girl and act more like a boy....so he punched the baby with closed fists and strangled him.
Little baby Roy was pronounced dead at our local hospital.

Pedro Jones
A Southampton (http://www.27east.com/story_detail.cfm?id=293472&town=Southampton&n=Suspect%20in%20Shinnecock%20infant%20death%20ple ads%20not%20guilty%20to%20manslaughter) man pleaded not guilty to first degree manslaughter Monday morning at Southampton Town Justice Court in connection to the death of a 17-month-old Shinnecock infant, who died shortly after an incident of cardiac arrest at the Shinnecock Indian Reservation on Sunday.....State troopers arrested Pedro Jones, 20, of Southampton after the death of the infant, Roy A. Jones III,..
[...]
Mr. Jones was not related to the infant, but was the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, police said. Police did not give the mother’s name.
At about 8:25 p.m. police received a 911 call of a child in cardiac arrest on Old Point Road at the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The infant was taken to Southampton Hospital and declared dead at 9:11 p.m.
Pedro Jones (http://www.longislandpress.com/2010/08/02/reports-babysitter-arrested-for-infants-death-on-reservation/) was charged with first-degree manslaughter. He hit the boy “several times throughout his body with closed fists” and grabbed him by the neck, according to the felony complaint filed by police.
The child, Roy A. Jones, was was not related to the suspect, police said. The boy died at Southampton Hospital shortly after 9 p.m.
It was widely reported that Jones is not a member of the tribe but lives on the reservation. So the baby killer beat him for crying. He was likely tired asswipe! and tired of being yelled at!
I cannot fully express my loathing for a grown man beating on a child, a baby ffs!! baby was 16 mo. this fucker 20 yo, hardly fair. I tell you, I would gladly beat this asshole senseless, beat the living daylights out of him. People like this do not respond to reason, they have to be beat to get the point across.
If someone does't beat him down in prison by the neck it will be a travesty. I hope he dies by the same wounds he inflicted on baby boy.
Poor sweet baby Roy A. Jones III, if I could make it right, I would. Rest in peace little one.

Child's name was Roy Antonio Jones III, no relation to the piece of shit who killed him
RIVERSIDE, N.Y. (WABC) -- A man babysitting his girlfriend's 17-month-old baby has been charged with killing him on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.
Police were called to the scene on Old Point Road East around 8:25 Sunday night.
The child was in cardiac arrest, police said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
Pedro Jones, 20, has been arrested on manslaughter charges.
Jones told reporters outside Southampton Town Justice Court that he didn't mean to do it.
"I'm sorry," he said. "That's my baby. I loved him to death."

According to court documents, Jones, who was not related to the boy, punched him over and over with closed fists and grabbed him by the neck.
Documents say he confessed to the crime, telling troopers, "I was trying to make him act like a boy instead of a little girl. I never struck that kid that hard before. A one-time mistake, and I am going to do 20 years."

A one-time mistake, and I am going to do 20 years.
No, a one-time mistake is hitting the baby once. You hit him several times all over the body. You let fly with your temper, your rage, and you killed an innocent little baby.
Just get over the idea that the baby should act like a boy (or a girl). At this age, they act on what they see and experience. Hmmmm. Either there is little male influence in his life, or you act like a girl yourself. Or, he failed to be impressed by you somehow.
Maybe your momma or daddy harped at you to be a man. Maybe you lack empathy because of it. Maybe you're jealous the boy was getting a chance to be a sweet kid for a while when you were denied it. Tough, big guy. Men pay for their mistakes. Now you can pay for it for the next 20 years. Boo hooo!

Pedro Jones Jr., 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Roy Antonio Jones III, 17 months. In return for the plea, Suffolk County Court Judge James Hudson agreed to sentence him to 16 years to life in prison. Also, prosecutors agreed to take no position when Jones appears before a parole board in 2026.
In court and on the video, Jones said he punched the boy, who is no relation, three times in the chest with a closed fist on Aug. 1, 2010. As he entered the plea, tears rolled down the defendant's father's cheeks.
In the video, Jones said he had been caring for the boy all day while his mother, Vanessa Collins Jones, worked. The boy started crying when she came home and then left to visit a cousin on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation shortly afterward, Jones said, so he hit the boy to quiet him.
During the confession, Jones said he beat the boy numerous times to get him to stop crying. State Police Investigator Thomas Hughes testified during the hearing that the boy's body was covered in bruises.
"My client wanted to accept responsibility for this," said Jones' attorney, William Ferris of Islandia. "He loved Roy, and he certainly didn't mean to cause his death. . . . It was an error in judgment."
Both Ferris and Jones' father said afterward that Vanessa Jones also beat the child and should have been charged.
"She bears most of the responsibility," said Pedro Jones Sr. "There were bruises on that boy before my son ever met her."
"Vanessa should have been on that indictment," Ferris said.
Her family members tearfully declined to comment, but Assistant District Attorney Raphael Pearl said there was no basis for the claim.
"The investigation by this office, State Police investigators and Suffolk County Child Protective Services found no evidence these allegations are accurate," he said. He added that nowhere in Jones' written and videotaped confessions did he "cite an instance remotely similar to these 11th-hour allegations."
In the video, Jones said Vanessa Jones scolded him for punching her son and told him he should limit himself to smacking him on the bottom if necessary.http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/boyfriend-guilty-in-tot-s-fatal-beating-1.3445897

There are a couple of things about this article that irritates the shit out of me.
During the confession, Jones said he beat the boy numerous times to get him to stop crying.
What logically makes sense about doing this? Inflicting pain on ANYONE is not going to make them shut up, it hurts, you're going to cry or scream or make some kind of noise.
Also....
"She bears most of the responsibility," said Pedro Jones Sr. "There were bruises on that boy before my son ever met her."
I hate when families defend actions that resulted in the death of not just anyone, but a defenseless baby. Whether the mother was to blame for previous child abuse or not was not the topic of discussion here. Their son was the one that killed the poor baby while the mother wasn't even home, she had nothing to do with his death.
On a different note, it is different to hear pieces of shit state they want to take responsibility for their actions. Usually it's, deny deny deny. So, I guess that is the silver lining in this otherwise tragic case.

Jones said he had been caring for the boy all day while his mother, Vanessa Collins Jones, worked. The boy started crying when she came home and then left to visit a cousin on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation shortly afterward, Jones said, so he hit the boy to quiet him.The little guy wanted his mommy. She left him with that POS all day, came home for a moment, and left again without him. I can't blame him for crying.
I think the POS pounded on him, not to make him stop, but because he was also frustrated about her leaving him and moreover leaving him with the baby again. So both the boys were sad and angry. The big boy won.
Both Ferris and Jones' father said afterward that Vanessa Jones also beat the child and should have been charged.
In the video, Jones said Vanessa Jones scolded him for punching her son and told him he should limit himself to smacking him on the bottom if necessary. She does bear responsibility for leaving her vulnerable little guy with a monster and not recognizing he was a monster. She bears responsibility for bringing a monster into the home. She bears responsibility for thinking that a monster was a grown up human man and taking that thing to bed with her. But, even the monster acknowledges that she told him not to hit her baby except on the butt. I do wonder that no charges were brought on her, but let's be clear that the killing was committed by the POS going to prison at long last.
Also, prosecutors agreed to take no position when Jones appears before a parole board in 2026.WTF! That's a bullshit condition. So now it will all be on the victim's family to make the case for keeping him in prison.

Man sentenced in killing of girlfriend's tot
A Southampton man was sentenced Thursday morning to 16 years to life in prison for punching his girlfriend's toddler to death.
Pedro Jones Jr. pleaded guilty in January to second-degree murder in the August 2010 death of 17-month-old Roy Jones III, who was no relation. Jones admitted punching the boy in the chest on the Shinnecock Indian reservation to get him to stop crying.
Before imposing the sentence, Suffolk County Court Judge James Hudson told defense attorney William Ferris he was offended by his suggestion that the boy's mother, Vanessa Jones, bore some responsibility for her son's death.
"This court will not accept idle speculation at the expense of a grieving mother mourning the death of her child," Hudson said. "I find these comments to be obscene."
Earlier, Jones tried to withdraw his guilty plea, but Hudson said he knew what he was doing when he entered the plea. Vanessa Jones said there was no reason to hurt her son.
"What did he do that was that bad?" she said in court. "What did he do that was that bad, that he had to die?"
Pedro Jones said, "Your honor, I am deeply sorry for what I did."

I might be reading into this too much, but tho we know who the disgraceful baby killer is, a mother's duty is to her child, no matter the inconvenience. I find it hard to feel for her when the abuse begun back in April 2010 when the POS began watching the baby... she had to know her son was being abused. If she didn't notice or care, that's even worse.

From a poster while looking for baby Roy's picture....the words were perfect.
" The Great Spirit spoke to me of this place of Peace, A place as peaceful as his gentle spiritual streams, he spoke of this place where no human hand or storm would ever harm, This peaceful place has gardens of his beautiul creations, And now I sit with him and listen to his gentle voice that whispers to me and says, 'Peace be with you in my home of a place called peace..."
