Horrific abuse of 2 little kids in Indiana. Curiously, the police were notified by a mom "who was not allowed to see her child" So who's kids were these and why were they in this home. Any detectives care to do a little digging??

Melissa Chandler was the one who reported that she wasn't access to her child. Her sister, Jennifer Leonard, is mother to the other child. All four of them lived together.

Total whack jobs. Did she think the cops would get her in the door and then just go on their merry way?

Damn, I'm good. I haven't even seen that article yet, but I'm sure glad I was right or I'd have looked like an asshat on the front page.. heh.

That probably is Jennifer's Myspace then. I'm postin' it. She lied about her age and lost some weight, but it looks like her, and the kid looks like a boy the right age.

Two of the four defendants in a highly publicized case of child abuse agreed to plea bargains this week.

Cass Superior Court I Judge Tom Perrone took plea agreements for both 29-year-old Jennifer Leonard and 34-year-old Donald Hawk under advisement until sentencing in April.

Acting on a complaint, Kokomo police in May 2008 discovered two 4-year-olds suffering from multiple injuries, including broken bones and open wounds.

Leonard and the other mother, 30-year-old Melissa Chandler, were eventually charged with eight felony counts each. They were accused of depriving their children of food and water, holding them in closets for up to three weeks at a time, beating them with kitchen utensils and binding them with zip ties.

On Thursday, Donald Hawk’s attorney, Michael Bolinger, told the court that his client had no formal education, an IQ of 60 and had never held a job. He suffers from a significant brain injury that affects his long-term memory.

During the plea hearing, Hawk admitted that he failed to report the injuries to medical professionals. In establishing a factual basis for the guilty plea, Perrone asked Hawk whether he had seen the children’s wounds.

“There’s a few times, yes,” Hawk said.

Hawk’s plea deal is open, which means punishment is left up to the judge. The maximum penalty for the two class C felony charges is 16 years in prison and $20,000 fine.

The plea agreement for Leonard dismissed six of the eight counts against her. The remaining charges are the same as Hawk’s. Leonard’s punishment has also been left up to the judge, but each sentence would be served concurrently if Perrone accepts the terms of the deal.http://www.pharostribune.com/local/local_story_058122724.html

LOGANSPORT, Ind. -- A Kokomo woman whose son and niece were bound with zip ties has been sentenced to eight years in prison under a plea agreement.

A judge on Friday sentenced Jennifer Leonard to two concurrent eight-year terms, the maximum sentence on each felony neglect count.

The abuse was discovered last May when Leonard's sister, Melissa Chandler, told police she was being denied access to her daughter.

Officers found both children had been regularly abused and held in a closet, one for three weeks. Both were deprived of food and water for extended periods.

The children are now in the custody of Child Protective Services. Chandler and a third defendant, Donald Hawk have similar plea bargains pending.

Hawk's wife, Madeline, who Leonard testified beat the kids with wooden spoons, also faces charges.

A second mother from Kokomo has been given an eight-year prison sentence in a case in which two 4-year-old children were bound with zip ties and held in a closet.

Thirty-one-year-old Melissa Chandler pleaded guilty to two felony neglect of a dependent charges. Chandler and three other adults were arrested last May after Kokomo police officers found both children had been bound to restrict their movements and deprived of food and water for extended periods.

Grant County Judge Jeffrey Todd said at Wednesday's court hearing that the children had been "tortured" and could have died within days if they had not been found.

Chandler's sister, 28-year-old Jennifer Leonard, has received a similar sentence. A man who shared their home has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, while his wife is set to face trial this summer.
