IL - Zachery R. Knowles, 26, was arrested Monday morning for injuring his girlfriend's 18-month-old child.
The boy's mother notified police Sunday night about the child's injuries, which included bruising to the ears and marks on the neck, back and stomach. The child was listed in fair condition Monday night at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
Knowles is being charged with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and endangering the life of a child.
The 25-year-old mother, Knowles' live-in girlfriend, told police she and Knowles went out about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, leaving the boy and the woman's 7-year-old daughter with a baby sitter. The couple returned to the house about midnight Saturday, and the mother took the baby sitter home.
When she returned, she found her son crying in the crib, which had a large hole in the side. She also noticed a hole in the wall and told police she observed Knowles vomiting from intoxication. She asked Knowles what had happened and he told her he fell on the child when he was in the crib.
The mother told police she saw red and purple swelling on the child's forehead, but didn't report it at the time because "she didn't know what to do." She also said this has happened before, but she couldn't prove it.
