A woman arrested for the killing of her boyfriend Sunday gave two different versions of the shooting, according to court records released Monday.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Jeconda L. White, 28, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Jesse J. Shirley, 27. Police said White and Shirley had one child together and had lived together for one week.
According to court records:
When police arrived at the 1700 block of Gillespie Place about 5 p.m. Sunday, they found White holding Shirley, who was on the ground and suffering a gunshot wound. A .45-caliber handgun lay nearby.
“I shot him! I didn’t mean to do it! It was an accident, but I shot him,” she said.
A witness, however, said White shot Shirley as he was running away, with his back to her.
White told the witness: “I had to do it! I had to do it! I’m going to jail for a long time!”
White told detectives she had argued with Shirley, retrieved a gun from her bedroom, opened her front door and shot him. Police found a shell casing in the entryway of her home.
