ALEXANDRIA — A 48-year-old Alexandria man remains behind bars, accused of beating his parents, including breaking his mother’s arm and causing internal bleeding last week.

Timothy D. Montgomery was being held in the Madison County Jail late Monday on $10,000 bond. Prosecutors have charged him with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class C felony punishable by two to eight years in prison. He’s also charged with two counts of criminal confinement, both Class D felonies that carrying possible sentences of six to three years behind bars, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the charges:

Montgomery was at his parents’ home in the 4300 block of East Indiana 28 on April 28, when he allegedly beat his father, 86-year-old Leroy Montgomery, and his mother, Joyce Montgomery, 84.

The couple’s daughter, Janalea Eliason, called family friend Tim McCormick on April 29, and asked him to go to the Montgomerys’ home and check on them. McCormick knocked on the door, but no one answered. He used a key to get into the residence and found the couple in their bedroom.

McCormick called police, and Madison County sheriff’s deputies and Alexandria officers found Timothy Montgomery inside his locked bedroom and arrested him.

The couple told police their son had been drinking alcohol the night before, “and for some unknown reason snapped” and started beating them, according to the affidavit. He ordered the two to stay in their bedroom.

Leroy Montgomery suffered a black eye in the attack. Joyce Montgomery suffered a broken arm and internal bleeding and was admitted at Community Hospital. Angie Wassil, a family friend, said Joyce was discharged from the hospital on Monday. Wassil, a certified nursing assistant, and her husband, Keith, are staying with the couple.

“He broke her arm pretty bad,” said Wassil, McCormick’s sister. “She’s just black and blue all over. I feel sorry for them.”

Timothy Montgomery, who had been acting as his parents’ caregiver, has since been arraigned on the charges, and a public defender has been appointed.

“These are good people,” Wassil said, “and he needs to sit in there (jail) and think about it for a while.”
