WINNIPEG — A plane flying from Germany to Colorado received an unexpected extra passenger this week, when an American woman gave birth during the flight.
Heather Randle was pregnant with her first child and travelling alone from Frankfurt to her home in Denver on Monday when her baby decided it was time to arrive — in mid-air, seven weeks early.
The Lufthansa plane made an emergency landing in Winnipeg, but not in time for the impatient child: Randle gave birth on the aircraft's galley floor, attended by three doctors who were also travelling on the aircraft.
"Karma's a wonderful thing," Randle told Global News from her hospital bed at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre. "I was absolutely blessed that there were three doctors on that plane and a nurse, and that they were all willing to get up. I mean they didn't have to get up and do anything — they could have said someone else will deal with it. They were there for me."
Winnipeg paramedics were waiting at the Winnipeg airport when the aircraft arrived with mom and new baby at 4:40 local time Monday.
Randle's husband, Bryce Randle, had been travelling separately and planning to meet his wife in Denver but quickly changed plans when he heard what happened.
The baby girl, named Trudence Sophia Randle, remains in a neo-natal intensive care unit, but is doing well. The suddenly expanded family is making plans to return to Denver but it's unclear when they'll be able to make the trip.
The mid-air arrival of her daughter was not the first aerial surprise for Randle: Her husband proposed to her on a flight as well.
The airline is covering the cost of the diversion because Randle was travelling within the safe guidelines of air travel while pregnant.

Congratulations, it's a Canadian!
