SILVERDALE - A man is in critical condition after he shot himself in the chest with a nail gun Thursday afternoon during a traffic stop for investigation of hit and run, the Washington State Patrol reported.
At about 1:40 p.m., troopers were on a traffic stop on Newberry Hill at Chico Way when they witnessed a Ford Explorer collide with a Ford Mustang.
Troopers made eye contact with the driver of the Explorer, who proceeded onto northbound Highway 3 after failing to stop and remain at the scene of the crash.
A trooper followed the Explorer with his siren on and lights flashing as they approached the exit to Kitsap Mall Boulevard. The vehicle exited to Kitsap Mall Boulevard at a slow rate, before coming to stop on the shoulder at the top of the ramp.
The driver was given several verbal commands by the trooper, but the driver did not respond. As the trooper approached the Explorer, he was told by an 18-year-old male passenger that the driver had shot himself.
According to the passenger, the nail gun, also known as a "ram gun," is a concrete tool that shoots an approximate 6-inch steel nail powered by a .22 caliber cartridge.
Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue transported the driver, whose identification is unknown, to Harrison Hospital for airlift.
