Some computer keyboards harbor more harmful bacteria than a toilet seat, research by Consumer group Which? has suggested.
In one case, a microbiologist recommended the removal of a keyboard as it had 150 times the recommended limit of bacteria.
That meant it was five times filthier than a toilet seat that was swabbed in the same test.
Which? Computing tips for a cleaner keyboard:
* first shut down and unplug your PC
* wipe surfaces with a soft, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth
* shake out any dust or food crumbs from the keyboard and disinfect with alcohol wipes.

When I get done feeling woozy, I am going to clean my mouse and keyboard.

Public Keyboards like say an internet cafee are disgusting but your own keyboard as long as you give it a periodical simple cleaning and idealy a tourogh every few months cleaning you are fine...

Although it doesn't say it in the article linked, the testing was done on keyboards in the offices of "Which? Computing" (the site linked)
I have only ever used "private" keyboards but now will never tough a public one. GROSS
and like dop said, a good cleaning every so often -whether I think it needs it or not!

Besides rubing it with wipes or knapkings with a little alcohol I tend to vacum and compress air the whole computer every so often.
I also pop the keys with a screw driver to thoroughly clean inside of it every other leap year.

Interesting topic. I have never tried this but tell me what you all think of this. I recently bought my oldest a laptop from a smaller computer store because they were having a great sale. While in the store talking with a technician I made a comment about hating how difficult it was to clean my keyboard and he told me to disconnect the keyboard and place it in my dishwasher! I thought for sure he was shitting me but he wasn't. He said as long as I used the dry cycle instead of air dry that it was the best way to clean a keyboard.
I haven't tried it because frankly I am too skeptical but I thought I would see if anyone has ever heard of doing this before.
What Would Satan Do

Long ago - when I had a desktop PC - my kid named "Not Me" spilled cola all over my keyboard and it was pretty gummy by the time I discovered it.
To clean it, I took it apart. It was just 2 outer pieces of hard plastic with a rubbery sheet sandwiched in between. The rubbery piece had all the electronicy stuff on it.
I put the upper keyboard piece in the sink under running hot water to get the goo off and after it dried reassembled it.
I wouldn't put an intact keyboard in the dishwasher. The water temp and dry cycle may be too hot for it. I wouldn't hesitate to put the 2 outer pieces in alone but am unsure if keys would stay on.

I have to clean my husband's keybroading once a week. When I turn keybroading down and shake......there will be dried crumbs, small shells from reese's pieces, fingernails (he's biter), and sometimes small dried boogers.
bllaaahhh......
