AKELAND, Fla. -- A pit bull named Tiger narrowly escaped after being attacked by an alligator near Lake Hunter in Lakeland on Tuesday.

Tiger's owner was taking the dog for a walk near the Polk County lake when a nearly 6-foot alligator rose from the water and chomped into him.

Tiger was fighting for his life, according to the Lakeland Ledger.

The dog owner tried to pull Tiger's leash to get the animal out of the alligator's deadly jaws, and in the end, the 66-pound dog was freed.

Tiger suffered scratches and puncture wounds, which allowed water to get into its lungs.
For now, Tiger is being cared for at the Christina Animal Hospital. Veterinarians said Tiger should make a full recovery, but the dog will have to have frequent doctor visits.

We saw an elderly lady walking her poodle by the edge of a canal in FL, we watched as she let her tiny dog drink at the waters edge and then we watched as a huge gator popped out of the water and snapped up the dog and went back into the water. My dad ran down and got the old lady away from the water. She was freaking out. It was truly horrible (not at all funny like they show on the movies)

An oz of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Where are people's sense in Florida. I would never let my dogs or kids near the water. Gators need to be hunted and their numbers diminished. There are too many and we have invaded their habitats with all the building.

Ignorant people also feed them making them not afraid of humans.

Bad situation all the way around.

I know we had a plethora of gators in the canal that ran behind our home. In the evening we could always hear the ducks screaming as they were being eaten by the alligators. My dad told us not to let our dogs by the water because they would end up dinner. Though curiously he did buy us an inflatable boat and let US KIDS paddle around in the water. (scared the holy hell out of me. I didn't want to hurt my Dad's feelings by refusing to ride in the boat so I paddled furiously up and down the canal and got the heck out of the water. I popped the damn thing later the same night and acted all upset when we found it deflated the next day)
