Man Killed By Pack of Dogs

HENRIETTA TOWNSHIP, Ohio--A 30-year-old Lorain County man is dead after being attacked by a pack of dogs.

It happened at a home on State Route 511 shortly after 12:00 Tuesday afternoon.

The Lorain County Sheriff's Department says, Michael Winters was found by his father lying in the driveway with over 100 bite marks on his body.

Winters was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say, Michael and his father, Michael Kywa, take in stray dogs and tend to them.

The Lorain County Dog Warden tells Fox 8 News, all the dogs have been euthanized. They will now be tested for rabies.

I never seen my kid's dad do it, but he always said he'd shoot wandering dogs. And when asked, his answer for doing so was exactly this.

i don't know your kid's dad, but it seems like he just wants to shoot a dog. wandering dogs are not a huge threat to the average Joe on the street. the vast majority of dog-related injuries are due to pet dogs.

I wasnt taking up for him, dooo not get me wrong there. The fuck ran over his own dog, a dog he'd had for 15 years. Not to mention all the shit he did to me.

The officer suffered minor injuries, including bites to his ankle, police Detective Bill Veteran said.

The five Chihuahuas escaped the 17-year-old boy’s home and rushed the officer as he stood in the doorway Thursday


The officer was treated at a hospital and returned to work less than two hours later.

- A 30-year-old man who rescued stray dogs and cared for them at his home was killed by the animals Tuesday in southern Lorain County, and officials said all the dogs must be put down.

Michael Winters was found dead by his father shortly after noon. He and his father, Michael Kywa, rescued stray dogs and kept them at their home on Ohio 511. They attempted to find homes for the dogs.

They had about a dozen dogs of various sizes and breeds at the house. Officials said some or all of the dogs turned on Winters. But investigators don't know why.

Kywa left the house about 11:20 a.m. and returned almost an hour later to find Winters lying in his own blood in the driveway.

"He had hundreds of bite wounds all over his body," county Coroner Paul Matus said. "His clothes were ripped off. He was bleeding heavily."

The dogs may have acted as a pack in attacking Winters, he said.

"When dogs develop a pack mentality, they can launch an attack on someone," he said. "I have never seen anything like this and I've been here since the 1970s."

Officials believe more than one dog attacked Winters. They declined to list the breeds of the dogs at the house.

"We captured all of the dogs," Sgt. Donald Barker said. "Police killed two of the dogs immediately because they were aggressive toward police officers."

All of the dogs taken into custody will be killed.

"We have no way of determining which dogs took part in the attack," he said.

Authorities and neighbors said the dogs on the property ranged from small dogs to a 200-pound Mastiff.

Winters’ father, Michael Kywa, frantically dialed 911 just after 12:15 p.m. after returning to his home at 48385 state Route 511 — between Quarry and Baumhart roads near the Henrietta Township line — from the store to find his son in a pool of blood.

“My dogs attacked my son,” Kywa told a dispatcher during the call.

When asked if his son was breathing, Kywa replied that he wasn’t. He also said his son was covered in bites and probably dead.

“It’s all over the place, from head to toe,” Kywa told the dispatcher during a conversation in which he cried out several times in anguish.

Kywa, 63, also told the dispatcher that he couldn’t touch his son’s bloody body because Winters had AIDS.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Don Barker said that when deputies arrived, they fanned out across the sprawling 9.12*-acre property with members of county Dog Warden Jack Szlempa Sr.’s staff to deal with the dogs, two of which were shot when they approached deputies in an aggressive manner.

During the hours-long search of the fenced-in property for the dogs, neighbors were told to stay inside their homes and media were largely kept back from the scene because of safety concerns.

Seven other dogs were euthanised at the scene, Chief Deputy Dennis Cavanaugh said. A 10th dog that was inside the house at the time of the attack was spared, he said. Barker said authorities had no choice but to put down all of the dogs, which varied in size and breed, but included a mastiff and a Rottweiler.“All the dogs are going to be euthanised,” he said. “There’s no way to tell which ones were involved.”

Kywa didn’t object to the dogs being put down, Barker said.

The dogs will be tested for diseases, including rabies, Matus said.

Barker said the dogs — many of them strays taken in by Kywa — appeared to have been well-fed and well-cared for.

“These are family pets, they love their dogs,” he said.
