The Trekkies are already totally shitting themselves about little rumors. I read a long diatribe by one that claimed that this flick was going to suck because the teaser trailer made it seem like the ship was built by humans, and that everyone knows that aliens had a bigger hand in building it. Plus they are freaking about the way the ship looks, with the turbines and such.
THATS how I know this flick should be good. ;)

You know as much as us horror fans like to bitch and moan about things, we've got nothing on The Trekkies.
I'm going to be the first to admit, I'm not that much of a Star Trek fan. I've seen the original show, and I honestly don't understand why its put on the proverbial pedestal the way it is. Its just as cheesy as 60's Batman.... but I guess that’s its charm.
I've only watched very little of The Next Generation. Its one of those TV shows that I'm sure I'd enjoy if I sat down and started watching from episode 1... but for some reason or another I just haven't.
I've never seen any of the previous Trek films. Haven't really interested me.
Basically I feel like this new Star Trek film is made for people like me. I'm familiar enough with the characters to be interested in the movie. But I also don't have such strong ties with the series that "obviously the ship was done wrong". Basically I think that puts me right within the target audience of this one. I'm defiantly looking forward to it, though!

I think I've seen every Star Trek film at least once but I'm not too familiar with the series. My dad used to watch them all the time, so I caught a lot of them as well, but it never really grabbed me the way other science fictions have. I guess they were always a bit too feel good and corny for me.
This film is an attempt to relaunch the franchise. I hope it works.

I hope it works too. I dug up some quotes by JJ Abrams about the new Trek film that are pretty interesting.
It was an opportunity to take what I think has been a maligned world to sound crass, a franchise and treat it in a way that made it something that I wanted to see. To take the characters, the thoughtfulness, the personalities, the sense of adventure, the idea of humanity working together, the sense of social commentary and innovation, all that stuff. To take it and apply it in a way that felt genuinely thrilling.
The whole point was to try to make this movie for fans of movies, not fans of `Star Trek,’ necessarily. If you’re a fan, we’ve got one of the writers who’s a devout Trekker, so we were able to make sure we were serving the people who are completely enamored with `Star Trek.’ But we are not making the movie for that contingent alone. You can’t really make a movie for them. As soon as you start to guess what you think they are going to want to see, you’re in trouble. You have to make the movie in many ways for what you want to see yourself, make a movie you believe in. Then you’re not second-guessing an audience you don’t really have an understanding of
I feel like this is so unlike what you expect, so unlike the `Star Trek’ you’ve seen. At the same time, it’s being true to what’s come before, honoring it, I can say the effects for `Star Trek’ have never, ever been done like this. … I can only tell you the idea of the universe of `Star Trek’ has never been given this kind of treatment
I think its cool that JJ will admit that he was more of a Star Wars fan, as apposed to Star Trek. And that he hopes to make the new Trek film as meaningful as the Star Wars franchise. Thats what I like to hear.

I think the main thing he want to inject is a sense of fun and adventure. These are the things that the geeks killed. They'd rather argue about how warp drive works, or how to say "your mother's a whore" in Klingon. Movie goers don't want that. They don't care about that. They don't need something really dumbed down either. A movie can be fun and smart. It can still be revelant, especially when space travel becomes more and more real for us. Science becomes more and more popular.
I mean, this pretty much sums it up....

It's been a while since I've post a whole shit load of news... let's see if I still remember how to do this 8)
I've got a whole shit load of stuff that needs to be post for Star Trek. Instead of hitting you all with the proverbial brick to the top of the head at once... I figured we'd start off small and go with these two teaser posters:

Yes... the fucking dude from Heroes will be playing Spock. That (and Simon Pegg!) is reason alone to watch the movie. I'm still not sold on the dude whose playing Captain Kirk. But I suppose it'll make due. I have seven more photos that I'll be posting tomorrow. I'd do it tonight... but its 12:38 and I'm tired. So fuck off.

I HATE Star Trek. Even as a kid, I couldn't stand it. Hate the films (although Wrath of Kahn is comedy gold) and all of the spin-offs. It would actually make me smile whenever any form of Star Trek failed. Was only hating the news of a Star Trek reboot because I hate the thought of the franchise actually becoming...viable...again.
That being said, I aw the trailer last night in front of 007. Eh. Looked ok. Might even go check this one out. The fact that I liked it means that hardcore fans are probably bawling their eyes out and bashing their Cheeto stained fingers all over their keyboards, in Klingon speak no less, on every Trekkie message board around the world. The thought of that makes me happy.

Well... if you want to know what people are saying then one needs to look no further than YouTube video comments:
This film has Thunderbirds written all over it.
I never thought I'd get to see the Enterprise 1701 in drydock once again. Beautiful.
This next one is my personal favorite:
How come Enterprise galaxy class starships are still welded together?...Surely everyone knows that the best spaceships are grown from the perfect carbon-crystalline alloys obtained at the langhrian zero net gravity points between the Moon and Earth, in a geostationary Earth orbit. I thought this was common knowledge?.
I dont care what you say. This looks like its gonna be good, but unfortunately it will probaly just come out a giant heaping over funded steaming pile of c r a p, thanks to J.J. Abrams. As you may tell, no, i dont like J.J. Abrams.
BOOOO!!!!
J.J. Abrahams crapped all over "Star Trek". They should've made a Deep Space Nine movie, this will bomb! Since when was James Kirk a rebel, in trouble with the law! Since when was they're sex appeal in space!
Come next summer, Uwe Boll will be safe from the title of worst overall director. A new hack has entered the building.
Looks like The OC in space. Pass
Shocking, people who do not like Trek and/or rarely watch it LOVE the Trailer. where are the REAL trek fans? Those are the people that matter. I for one think it looks horrendous!
Yes, Kirk is a Rebel, but what is with Spock's emotions? That is annoying. This looks like it should be on the CW after Smallville. This does not resemble Star Trek. Throwing away FORTY years of Trek Canon to make a quick buck. Disregarding the fans. GARBAGE
Well... actually the first part of that guys post IS pretty spot on. Star Trek fans seem to HATE this new film, while everyone else thinks it looks pretty cool. I guess I can kind of see there side of things... it'd be like if they where to remake The Evil Dead, without Sam Raimi or Bruce Campbell. I'm sure I'd hate it no matter how it turned out.

I'm a fan of TOS & TNG & when it was released that actors besides Shatner & Nimoy were playing their respective parts I loathed the idea. That trailer did nothing to make me feel any differently.
Public Enemies & The Hobbit, those are the only flicks on the horizon that have me amped. (one of which is 3 years away) I'm completely indifferent towards Watchmen.

I think the trailer looks pretty exciting. I'm guessing this flick is going to score low on the IQ exam and high on popcorn fun and flash; I'm hoping for more balance. I think that this generation of geeks need some sci-fi to collectively get behind. Star Wars dumped gallons of stupid on our heads.

As a kid, I preferred Star Wars. Now, as an adult, I realize that Star Trek was always the superior fictional world.
My fear is that they are going to turn Star Trek into Star Wars. Make it accessible and fun, instead of focusing on the ethical dilemmas that made Star Trek compelling.
I don't get the extreme youth of the cast. I can't imagine trusting the fate of space to a bunch of college kids. Why wouldn't they pick the people with the most experience, instead of those with the most potential? If you are going to choose a cast for their longevity, foreseeing a long run with the franchise and TV episodes, then at least do some make-up to add 10 years to their visages. This way you could let them age into their characters, do some youth-makeup 20 years from now, and give them a 30-year run.
I'm going to have an impossible time getting over their ages, and the casting of Spock was a tragedy. Epic failure. You can't cast the most likable character, the most ethically-driven, with a dude that is universally loathed by everyone who has seen even a single episode of his former work. CAST UNKNOWNS in these re-makes.
CPL CHUD
November 17th, 2008, 01:33 PM
I can see this being more fluffy than being hard physics science fiction; which is kind of what I expected. I agree, I want to see a cast that is a better mix and could mesh with real world sensibilities, and I'd like to see something with less flash and more substance. This kind of looks like that Lost in Space flick we were subjected to a while ago, which worries me. I want it to be a good movie, but I think they are more worried about impressing teens not familiar at all with the franchise than impress old and new geeks alike.
Why does it have to be one extreme or the other?

Just because an actor played the villain in Heroes doesn't me he won't be good at playing a likable character in a Star Trek Film. I mean... Heath Ledger went from the gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain to The Joker in The Dark Knight. Now is Zachary Quinto as good an actor as Heath Ledger? Probably not. But the point still stands.
